10.5.5 Update stuck - is it worth all the trouble ?

I have just downloaded the latest update ( 10.5.5 ) and then rebooted my iMac , next the software Update
box appeared on screen as usual, saying .. Installing 1 item , configuring Installation .
Then the Blue progress bar started to move to the right , went about 1/4 of an inch and stopped there, I left the iMac running for Two hours and the progress blue bar had not moved. I then turned off the iMac , re booted , re connected to the internet , clicked software up date, the 10.5.5 update was shown again, I then clicked to download this update, then the do you want to shutdown now notice appeared, so I shutdown again and the whole same process started again as before . So basically It seems that the update 10.5.5 has been downloaded onto my iMac, but gets stuck on the .. Installing 1 item - configuring Installation part.

I have gone through the Zap PRAM and Repair Permission , but that seems not to have resolved any thing
I did un plug any external USB items while the - Installing 1 item - configuring Installation part was in operation.

and Ive gone through the Apple web page ... Mac OS X 10.5: Troubleshooting installation, startup, and login issues , ..... but cannot see any thing that relates to my problem

I have had a long look through this forum for an answer , but no luck yet only, other people with different 10.5.5 update problems.

I only have a dial up internet connection which makes this large update a pain in the backside to do, so If I have to re install this 10.5.5 update again its going to drive me back to drink .

Other that that the iMac is running fine.

Should I have waited a bit longer before trying to update to 10.5.5 , it it really worth all the trouble ?

I am fairly new to Apple Mac's and I never thought that there would ever be a problem with a simple update
to my first ever Mac , a bit disappointing really .

so any help would be most appreciated which hopfully will re boost my confidence in the whole new Mac experience

Thanks

iMac 24 inch 2.8, Mac OS X (10.5.4), My First Ever Mac

And is it just me, or does 10.5.5 actually run slower than 10.5.4?

If anything, my Macs run slightly faster after the update. I suggest you read the troubleshooting article previously mentioned in this thread & take the steps it mentions to resolve your problems. If that doesn't help, try starting your own thread. Each situation is different & it becomes very confusing to try to help more than one user in the same thread.

Downloading the file to a PC should work, but remember that your Mac must be able to recognize the thumb drive's format to read files from it. You might do a test run with some small files first if the cafe charges by the minute, or convince someone to do this for you if you don't want to commit to a larger fee without knowing if everything is configured properly in advance. (Maybe trade a few minutes for a cup of coffee or something?)

Aside from that, the only thing you need to know is that you should not attempt to manipulate the dmg file on the PC other than to do a copy to the thumb drive.

Disclaimer: I have not tried anything like this myself & do not use PC's on a regular basis, so I cannot advise you on how to use PC download software & may not know about some quirk(s) that could cause you problems.

R C -R Thanks again , its appreciated , I was hoping that all I had to do was go into the Internet shop , insert my 2 GB Thumb Drive on the PC, and download the Update to it, The USB Thumb drive I am intending to use is at the moment formatted as MS-DOS ( FAT 16 ) do you think this format will be OK to use and the Mac will recognize the downloaded info ? . The cost for using the Internet ADSL PC is $ 1.17 per Hour . Thanks

Hi,

I'm having a similar problem with my Macbook. Last night, it said that it had downloaded some software updates (10.5.5 included) and was ready to install. I clicked the "install" and it gave me some percentages. Afterwards, it said "Running Install Script", and the blue status bar had only gone maybe 10% of the way. I went to sleep and left it running until this morning (8am) but it was still stuck on the same screen as I had left it last night, so I shut off my computer manually. I went to check the "About this Mac" and found "System Version: Mac OS X 10.5.5 (9F33)". I went to the Library and there was no Packages folder, so am I safe to assume that it installed correctly?

Redstain. I have the exact problem you are experiencing. I also have an intel iMac 20 in. The downloaded file is there. You have to reconnect to apple server and when you get the option to restart to install click "Not Now". Under Edit I believe you would see Download, Download and Install or install. Choose Download only. The file would then be saved in your Download folder. I got the file. 321 MB and burned it on a CD. I tried to install it from the CD and the same thing is happening. I waited for approximately 12 hours and it stayed on Configuring Installation. Did you add any none apple memory to your system? I had put in a piece of Crucial memory. Maybe that is my problem. I am checking further.

Hi Doye , I think my problem may be a little different to the one you have, due to my very slow dial up internet connection when I downloaded 10.5.5 , my internet connection dropped off, and was reconnected and the download continued , then when I tried to install the completed update .

The Blue progress bar started to move to the right , went about 1/4 of an inch and stopped there, I left the iMac running for Two hours and the progress blue bar had not moved.

I finally track down the update by looking in ... Macintosh HD > Library > Updates > Mac OS X Update >
and I notice that the download update was was not the correct size ( too small) , may be due some how to when internet was interrupted and re connected and the download was continued . so I deleted the download file , and I now can again download the 10.5.5. update , which I could not due before due to the sticking Installing 1 item , configuring Installation part, so now Ive removed the corrupted first download attempt every thing is back to normal, the only thing I have to do now is find some how to download the up date onto a Thumb drive or CD may be from a friend or internet cafe where the download speed is faster that my dial up connection speed.
