Help with getting my HP PSC 1210 ALL-IN-ONE to Scan. Print works great!

Hi I have an HP PSC 1210 All in One and a macbook with leopard. It prints great with no trouble. But the only driver that will get it to scan is VueScan. I very rarely use my scanner and even then only for personal use so before the VueScan watermarks weren't a problem. However, I need to use my scanner for some professional reasons tonight and can't have the watermarks. I realize I could pay the $39 it costs for the full version of VueScan but I don't believe that I should have to pay in order to use hardware that should just work to begin with especially just for two scans! I've tried installing HP's drivers all day...it says its installed and then when I open the HP Device Selector my printer doesn't show up on the list or it says this device isn't equipped for scanning.
Can anyone please help me out? I'm getting really frustrated.
Thanks!

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

This is what HP has to say:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01234231&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us &lang=en&os=219&product=90764

Says the driver needed to be installed while using 10.4, and then upgrade to Leopard would transfer the driver over....
To me this means the driver works, but the installer doesn't, on Leopard.

I don't have experience with this, maybe someone else will chime in.

Thanks.
Yeah the actual program works and installs fine but then I open it and it says Scanner Not Initialized (Scanner not found) and won't let me scan. But I know that its kind of BS bc my all in one is definitely connected and definitely on and the computer must be recognizing it since it prints without any problem. And it scans fine if I use VueScan (but again I need these w/o the watermarks and can't afford VueScan and shouldn't have to buy it to begin with!) so I know that it's working! It's just a matter of getting it to understand that it works I guess.
I have no idea where my leopard cd is and even if I did the idea of uninstalling leopard, then updating the driver, and then reinstalling leopard isn't very appealing.
Is there anything like VueScan that I can download for free and just use and not have to worry about watermarks?
Thanks.

I tried Twain and it downloaded great and then said it couldn't be installed on my computer.
I'm so frustrated I could cry. And I really needed to do this for my internship.
Maybe my public library has a scanner and I could just email the images to myself. Or maybe Staples has one at their Copy/Fax center.
It's so irritating because I have a lot of HP products and am a pretty loyal customer for them and they just kind of screwed me over.
