Pop Sever Rejected my Password

I have been experiencing problems with macmail since 10.5 was released. POP server rejected my password box intermittently. It is annoying and Apple Support told me 10.5.5 was released to help solve this problem. Well so far it has not. Is there anyone with suggestions as to how to fix this problem?

G5, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

This is DEFINITELY, UNDENIABLY a COMCAST problem. Here's why:

I have a Mac at home, which has two e-mail accounts: 1) My @mac.com address, 2) My wife's @comcast.net address. Mine works fine, hers prompts me for the password annoyingly.

I know it's a Comcast problem because I also have a laptop used solely for my work -- a piece of crap PC -- and I have Outlook set up to receive mail from a Comcast account. It worked fine until the exact same day that my Mac started spitting out password requests. On the very same day, the PC laptop using Outlook also started getting password prompts for the Comcast account. Comcast: Get your act together!!!!

I too had to use force quit in order to re-boot.

However, this morning I downloaded all Mac updates, including 10.5.5.. and I haven't had the pop-up asking for my password since then.

I would love to blame Comcast but I think this time it is an Apple problem. I love my Mac but I do not like how difficult it is to communicate with Mac and get them to address problems like this.

I am a Verizon user and have the same problem, it happens every couple min's or sooner and I have only had this issue in the past on occasion. I don't think it is a comcast issue per say. I think it is a Mac issue. They seam to send out more updates lately. I think it is because of the Iphone. By the way, my Iphone has became more reliable with the current updates. But something as simple as the mail program on the mac, should be solid by now. So to all you Comcast customers, don't blame them.

I have this problem as well, only on my Comcast account.

I suspect it is a fault on both Comcast and Apple's part.
Here's my guess. comcast pop server is intermittently
or often rejecting the attempted login. It's not that the
keychain has the wrong info. but Mail only has one fallback,
to ask you to enter the "correct" password. There's no memory
that "this password worked 200 times recently and the one you entered
is the same and worked when I tried it again".

So, as a programmer, I'd put in some logic to retry, especially if
the password has worked for a bunch of times, or if the user
keeps entering the same info. Maybe a warning popup if the
problem persists or if connection has been unavailable for a
longer time.

Same thing here. Total garbage. I went back to using Thunderbird and Firefox. Thunderbird works and Firefox doesn't crash when you quit the application like Safari does. I sold Macs for 14 years and have never had so many problems with an operating system. If it were related to an iPod, I'm sure someone would fix it immediately!!!! Apple has definitely given up on it's core business for a stupid mp3 player and a bulky candy bar phone.

I am also having this problem, but am reticent to call Comcast since they're apparently not being receptive. I have 3 Comcast pop accounts, a mobileme account, 2 IMAP accounts, and a Hotmail account (using the HTTP mail plugin). Guess which 3, and only 3, accounts are giving me the errors!

In addition to the password reject errors, I also get server time-out errors. This could be one of those Mac-unfriendly problems, where there is some configuration (a feature, not a bug) that makes it reject connections from Macs--I've seen it before with other providers (I do Mac home set-up/problem solving on the side).

By the way, just how does being able to log into a web mail program prove that it's not the fault of Comcast when dealing with a client mail program?

Hello
I have been having email trouble since Sept 22.
Numerous calls to Comcast, numerous google searches for a fix.
I cannot send or receive email through mac mail, but can access it at Comcast's website.
Not acceptable. It shows that I am not connecting to the POP server.
All of my settings for comcast are correct.
The problem began the day after I upgraded to Leopard.
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't been able to send or receive emails from my mac email account since April! Every couple of minutes the password box pops up and the reply is always "The SMTP server “smtp.mac.com” rejected the password for user" The mail account seems to work fine when I add my gmail account but the mac.com mail will not work. I also have comcast, so I'm not sure if that is the issue, but the rejected password message never says "comcast;" it always says "smtp.mac.com" rejected the password. I read the "help" info on the rejected password box and it said to confirm that the account and password under "preferences" matched my ISP account, but the password in preferences is just a bunch of dots so I can't confirm. I've tried changing it a million times and now I am totally lost!
Any suggestions?

For some reason, it was a good day today. Haven't had the pop-up problem since yesterday.

I can't figure it out. A couple of months ago I had the problem for a week or more, then it stopped. Its started again a few days ago, and now its stopped.

Can't figure what is different, what I have done differently.

Now that I have posted this saying its fine, it will start again.

Although I was beginning to think Apple was the culprit. I really believe that Comcast is involved somehow.

Amen to this thread. Over the past two days I've have to keep mail closed so I could get work done because the popup windows every minute (and sometimes even more frequently) asking me for my Comcast mail passwords (I have two Comcast email addresses, one for personal matters, one for business). It has improved -- but not completely resolved the problem -- over the past 24 hours. This is at least the second time that this issue has driven me crazy. By the way, my separate Earthlink account hasn't sneezed once, so I suspect it may be an incompatibility between OSX 10.5 and Comcast --- ON THE APPLE SIDE OF THAT RELATIONSHIP!
