Hard Pan won't hard pan!

Hi all. I'm really new to this and i'm starting to pull hairs out. I'm trying to set up a click track for a show i'm doing. I want to pan the click i have already created to the left and then use software instruments and pan them to the right. However when I pan my click to the left, I can still partially here it in the right and I need nothing from the click on that side. Can anyone help me with this?!? The same is happening in soundtrack pro and garageband. Is it my mac?

Is your Audio interface connected through a mixer or direct to the Speakers?

Check your cables...
try to disconnect Left or Rigth channel cable.
check also the Buss sends and Aux for headphones and FX

check your headphones connector...
there are some different types...

if pan on the system works there are some sends opened ...

are you using "klopfgeist" as click in Logic?

In any case on my system if I pan to left... the sound goes totally to the left side!

If its happening on your system settings on more than one pair of headphones it would suggest a hardware issue - if your Mac is still under guarantee I would get it checked...

Just one thing and apologies if I missed this in the post - your hard panning isn't working for the metronome in logic.... what happens when you hard pan your system playing other stuff - if you still have a problem its got to be the internal sound card IMO.

What audio hardware/interface are you using? Or when you say "direct to headphones", does that mean you're plugging headphones directly into your mac?

Some stereo crosstalk, ie. bleed from one channel into the other, is common on almost all audio equipment. The cheaper the gear, usually the higher the amount of crosstalk.

But it should be a very very low level of click getting through to the "wrong" side... Certainly should be low enough that your music and synths should drown it out.

Does it work the 'other way' too? Do you hear some of the soft synth signal on the left side where the click is supposed to be?

And lastly, can I ask why it is you need to do this? Why do you need a mono split of click/music.... I only ask because maybe there's a different route to get the intended result.

good luck.

I have the same problem as well. I'm pretty sure it is a software problem because when I convert the file to an MP3 and put it on an ipod, it still isn't hard panned. The problem really comes when there is nothing in the "synth" track to drown out the click. On a huge sound system, a quiet click gets quite loud. I'm going to try logic studio soon to see if it works. Let me know if you guys have any suggestions

Some friends of mine had a similar problem. They wanted to use an ipod as a live back-up band (Lame, I know) and the click and music were hard-panned, like you're trying to do, but there was a problem. The electronics on the new Ipods bleed certain frequencies to both sides of the phones to give an "enhanced" experience. So in their situation, you could hear the click within their backing tracks when they played live.

You're using an imac, right? Maybe there's the same issue with it's sound driver. Maybe a similar issue with your phones. And if you're using itunes to listen with the sound enhancement feature on, then you are definitely going to have issues.

I meant to respond to the O.P. by the way
