MAC UPDATE BEWARE!!

Hello everyone! this is my first post here. (i believe) I'm in a big situation here and it seems like everyone else may be in the same. After updating to the newest update for leopard and tiger, my system has not been the same. (10.5.11)
My computer and many others that ive been around where all doing the same. Below i have some computers that I worked on and there symptoms.

SYMPTOMS

-slow start up
-some start up commands not working
-firewire ports non functional
-update freezing
-blank desktop upon loggin in (no icons, dock or anything. non functional)

*MacBook Pro-*

It all began when it took like 10 minutes to boot up my macbook pro. (usually its like 5 sec) I thought maybe I had bad sectors in my drive or maybe the permissions are messed up. Wrong. I ran disk repair and permissions, and all was "good". I also noticed that my firewire port doesn't work anymore. I cant boot up an external harddrive, attache a camera, or anything!. After fining out that my computer is crapping out, i called apple. They suggested the norm when it come to start up problems. disk Utility, reset PRAM, power management, safe mode,...you name it. didn't work. After hours and hours of hardcore research and papers full of suggestions, nothing worked. I decided to restore my computer. So what anyone would do, I popped in the disk and started to restore. After fully (i mean fully) deleting the data on the drive, installing leopard, and booting the system, nothing worked. I mean, i still had the same problems. Firewire ports not working, and a unstable system. One may say, hardware problems? haha i dont think so. (i hope) One day it worked and one day it didn't. after updating that is. In the end, I'm shipping my computer off to apple because i dont have patients anymore.

I got a call from a client of mine and he was wanting to do copy come audio files to a disk. I agreed to help him. All was good until we couldn't open itunes because it required a update. So like anyone would do, I proceeded to run system updates. After running updates, one particular update was available. 10.5.11. I clicked update and all went downhill from there. The update downloaded ok and it hanged on the installing part. it was just sitting there for 20 min. with no sounds or nothing. So i tried quitting with no result. I forced the system to shut down and i was paining on restarting back into mac. ah, no no no. nope! after having the computer sit for 1/2 hour, the system wasnt booting at all. after several tries, no luck. I tried everything. you name is i've done it. reset pram, pwr mgr, safe md, disk utility, target mode,...everything! nothing. So i decided for this computer to do an archive and preserving. I couldn't delete the system because 1 it wasn't mine, two the person had 10GB of pictures from all over the word, and 3 he did't have it all backed up. So. i did an archive with preserving. YES! finally. my computer booted back up. long and behold, my password didn't work. nothing worked! I reset the password, and tried again. After 3 hours or trouble shooting, phone talk, and buddy help, the system booted up. booted up to a blank wallpaper screen with no return of opening successful. After that failed, i shut down the system and did some thinking. I wanted to just back up the system at this point. Most of the boot up commands wernt working and i was running out of ideas. Target Mode! I'll try that. After hooking up the cable to a working stable mac, the computer wasn't showing up. nothing was happening. I suspected this to be the mysterious fire port that was causing the problem. with no luck, i went to get some help...

*-mac g4 towers/other*

I'm in a TV/Video class. We use firewire cameras and DV Decks. After updating last weekend, nothing has been working sense. The computer wou;d detect any firewire devices or anything! Not even a new imac that was updated! 😟 Your probably saying, wow thats odd. After 2 days of research, product testing, and isolation of the problem, we couldnt get it fixed, and we suspected it to be the update

Conclusion

this update killed my mac 😟

this update killed my clients computer :P

this update made us from not doing our video editing work at school :\

this update is baaaaaaaaaaaad. at least to all the computers that ive been around. like 6!

that being said, I called up bestbuy/apple store today. I told the apple guy there my symptoms and everything. After telling him this, He was like "thats funny, a lady with the same computer came in today with the same problem. no icons or anything on her wallpaper" After talking to him, they didn't know what the problem was and i guess was researching this too. They too were going to call apple.

I called up apple to and explain the problem to the product specialist. They are looking into it and looking at this update.

I'm suspecting it to be the update or maybe the firmware update since my firewire ports still wasnt working after reinstalling the system.

please give me your feedback. If theres anybody out there experiences the same problems, please write!

macbook pro, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

Welcome to the Leopard forum. I think you are confused. The last Tiger is 10.4.11, the latest Leopard is 10.5.5
Are you mixing up your updates?

My computer and many others that ive been around where all doing the same. Below i have some computers that I worked on and there symptoms.

Usually multiple computers that exhibit the same failure have similar 3rd party software installed.

I have none of these symptoms on any of my three machines.

If it were the update, these boards would be overloaded by over a million Leopard users with these problems.

Your best bet is to reload your TM or other backup onto the machines.

While I am experiencing a plethora of issues in 10.5 Leopard that I was not in 10.4 Tiger, my experience with the last point update has been flawless.

I think you'll find the issue you're experiencing is the exception to the norm. Although you may find more people here with the issue, that's only because this is the place where people come when their systems have issues.

With your MBP, it's extremely unlikely that a software update damaged your hardware. The most likely thing that comes to mind is that there's a hard drive issue. I know it seems bizarre that one day it worked then the next it failed after a software update, but I've been in tech support for years and I've found such coincidences do incur.

It's not a coincidence. When a large update is installed, the HD is used quite heavily, as is RAM. Any weakness will show up as if it were a heavy load test.
Also, updates install on previously unused areas of the HD which may be defective or marginal.
There is a lot of activity during an update, and it is a real test of a system. Marginal systems may crash or fail. They would do so later anyway, like that lightbulb that burns out when you turn it on, rarely when it's already burning. Transients, etc. are the cause, not really a coincidence; although there is that extremely rare true coincidence as well.

Matthew, despite what some of the commenters are saying, you are NOT the only one experiencing problems with the latest update, 10.5.5. If you look around the discussion boards, you will see that MANY others are also having problems with installs, system freezes and crashes, displays and USB devices.

My USB modem has not worked since the update, and I am also having a lot of freezes.

There seem to be a few guys on here who want to blame anything but the software update that precipitated all these problems.

As one of those "few guys" I am sad to report that I cannot duplicate your problem.
Have you contacted your Modem manufacturer yet?
Until your modem manufacturer updates the firmware, just use your TM backup as others have done to go back to 10.5.4 and wait and enjoy. Complaining here does not help. Nobody here works for Apple. This is a user-to-user forum.
Enjoy

Hi nerowolf.

I am new to Apple Mac and have the latest Leopard 10.5.5 update installed with no perceived problems. Now that that is out of the way, and I apologize in advance in case I am hi-jacking this post, but you mentioned above, "(snip) just use your TM backup as others have done to go back to 10.5.4".

Being new to this the Apple system and Time Machine procedures, how would I go about taking such a quantum step back to what really amounts to a "restore previous version"?

I mean, we are not talking about replacing a page, we are talking about disregarding a huge chuck of data.

I forgot to mention, I have TM up and working to an external USB HD.

Regards

Pick a date from Time Machine that is just before the date the update was installed and tell Time Machine to go back to that date. Time Machine will return your computer to exactly like it was on that date. Any data that was created since that date will be lost so if there is anything that you don't want to lose, it should be copied to a separate backup device (thumb drive) before the roll back.

Sorry about the update confusion.. I guess my mind wasn't straight :\

Someone said that when you update your system, your computer basically uses all of its resources to do that update. Harddrive, Ram,... My computer is maxed out for upgrades. So its system specs are up there. I do find it weird that after updating this, the system just crapped out. Along with multiple other users that I know. As far as applications go, don't you think a clean install would fix everything? I mean, someone mentions that it could be common for 3rd party apps tp mess up the system. Yes your correct. If you restore the system and completely 0 out the drive, one would think that, that should fix it. So its much more then the one update. Its sounding like the firmware update to me because once you update the firmware, you cant just time machine back to the original. You have to flash the firmware and then install the version you want. (i talked to apple and thats what they said)

So I am blaming this on the update. I dont know why some people arnt effected by it but, its weird. One day I was in heaven with my computer. The next, my computer was in ****. You have to ask yourself. If you didn't install anything, or do any changes on it, what would of caused that? I dont know. My computer and about 6 others did the same all over night.

UPDATE

I shipped out my computer today and I'm supposed to get results in acouple of days.

I talked to a apple guy in best buy and he cant find out why computers are coming in like this and is currently researching this. He also said he called apple and apple couldn't give him any information (for some reason) about the current issue. After the fact that they knowledge that it was in issue.

If the update is a bad update, you can have issues. If the update didn't install correctly, you can have issues. That update couldnt of installed incorrectly on 6 computers. Something far far far! worse in going on.

Since the problem happened to your machine and to your clients machines, don't you think that's a common enough thread to look at their specific setups? I beta-tested Leopard on my G4, got the iMac in April and beta-tested all five updates, using both machines, and haven't experienced the issues you had. So, from my point of view, it's not the update, but something specific to your hardware/software configuration.

true. I hopefully get an update on my computer today. The other machine are piratically brand new from apple. one imac is right out of the box. updated it and it didn't work again. we didn't install any software or anything besides updates. We installed fcp and we noticed the firewire ports didn't work. tried everything but no luck. my laptop is the only thing that really craped up. the firewire 800 ports work on the towers but not the 400. any ideas?
