want to Wake Sleeping Mac over Internet from anywhere ? Look here

i've been trying to wake my sleeping MP from remote location for a long time , now i cracked it by the help of google reading and especially thx to Mr Gamble developer of WOL app for iphone " SleepOver" app for iphone .

so i'm willing to cut short your struggles and share my experience to anyone wanting to wake you Mac on a Local network from anywhere imaginable .

the rule is router has to be connected to Ethernet port.

waking your Mac on your local network ( meaning when you are conected to your router through wi fi directly to your router isn't that difficult to achieve . tricky bit is if you want to wake your Mac from remote location from your iphone or any other PC . it can be done but not all routers will allow you to do that . you need a right router . plus there's quite a bit needs to be changed in router's configuration. but good thing is if you really want that to happen there is a possibility .

i use iwol and SleepOver apps.on my iphone both of them do same thing but first i got iwol and only could wake my MP locally . then i tried SleepOver app and i achieved both Local Wake up and over internet too . again both apps can achieve same things but i wouldn't have done it as i mentioned already without good support and recomendations of SleepOver's developer .so if you get it working either of them IWOL or SleepOver is a fantastic combination with Jaadu VNC and File Magnet apps .
you can wake your Mac from say Paris in London then use Jaadu VNC app to browse your Mac in London as if you were sitting in front of it then open other end of File Magnet from within Jaadu VNC which is installed on your mac and drag and drop file(s) you want over to your iphone . then you open File Magnet on your iphone and there they are! files you wanted will be quickly downloaded.

so enough of showing off and if anybody wants to achieve it i will provide guidelines and recomendation on right gear .

so long for now

Hi , mmm you're correct . i was at home on local network while i was testing FileMagnet ..just realized
that. solution would be , if you are on broadband on your target PC then you can email file you need to yourself . that defenetely will work .
have you set up Wake over Internet already or just looking at possibility ?

well waking sleeping Computer over internet isn't easy to set up . you need right gear to achieve that. you need to have a router that will allow you to wake your computer over the internet not all of them can do.

I am using the Linksys WRT-160N, but it does not work out of the box, you have to replace the Linksys firmware with
the DD-WRT firmware. You can see some notes on the SleepOver website, with a link to the DD-WRT site.

If you do get this router and decide to install DD-WRT then you must follow the instructions closely, you have to
install a smaller version of DD-WRT first, then you can install the full version over the top of that.

This is the only router that I personally have had working, but several other people have reported other routers which
might work with less changes than mine. (see SleepOver router's page for alternative routers that will work )

if you decide to get Linksys WRT-160N then i will give you further configuration suggestions . but remember replacing Linksys Firmware by even more advanced DD-WRT firmware will void your routers worranty .

Hi,

I have just tried something that seems to work with any router (I have a sweex myself).
The way I got it to work is as follows:
- set up a port forward in the router for the following ports: 7 and 9
- use any wake on lan utility,I use the following:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/networking_security/wakeonlan.html
-add a new computer to the wake on lan tool, by using your internet ip address (the one you get from your ISP, not the local ip address you get from the router) and use the mac address from the computer (and not the one from your router)
- go to system preferences, energy saver and select the 'wake for ethernet network administrator access'

That is all there is to it. Note that you cannot put the computer to sleep using this method (at least, with the tool I use). But you can use the energy preferences to make it sleep after a certain period.

Hope this helps anyone,
Rishi
