iPhone will not ring, calls go direct to voicemail

Since the iPhone 2.1 upgrade, half of the calls to my iPhone do not cause the phone to ring at all. Instead, I get a notification later that there is a voicemail (if a voicemail was left).

The ringer is switched on and the phone does ring sometimes... but only sometimes.

I am sitting here at my desk at work and have full strength on AT&T, so I'm not even moving around, yet the phone doesn't ring half the time.

Rebooting didn't help.

I'm also having intermittent problems where SMS messages are taking hours to arrive at my phone, although this problem seems to have gotten better in the past few days.

I'm wondering if this is some kind of AT&T problem...

I'm having the same problem. This didn't happen before the 2.1 update, so it seems like a bug.

I bought a brand new shiny iPhone 3g s, black 16 mb and now suddenly the phone randomly does not receive calls especially when the phone is on the standby for more than 10-15 minutes. This doesn't happen all the time, but just randomly. Have done everything and I am an IT guy so I do know about troubleshooting. But the hotshot iPhone still does it sometimes. Got useless answers from Apple and ATT. Maybe os 3.1 fill fix this basic "phone" issue.

Anybody from Apple reading this, at all?

This is ridiculous.. Started happening to me a few weeks ago. I think around when I upgraded to OS3.. I'm on the latest now (3.0.1), and have gone thru every step customer service at both ends has offered (ATT & Apple). First was just a restore, of course. Second was to get a new SIM card from ATT.. Then I called Apple, and they had me restore from a fresh download. Still same issue. I cannot receive calls during sleep mode. Both ATT and Apple customer service are out of ideas.

You'd think that we loyal customers that drop $400 on hardware, and $150 a month on service would get better help from our providers. The best advice I can get from either is to buy a 3G, or 3GS. Makes you wonder if there is a programmed death in these things! BTW, how long has this thread been active with no resolution??

Well I have tentatively found a solution.
I booted the phone in DFU mode, and restored from fresh installation.
Then I made sure to not install any applications except those that came standard with the installation. So far so good. I am installing my old apps one at a time from a fresh download to see which is causing the conflict.

I even have "push" activated and it seems to be working. I gotta admit I've been cursing both Apple and ATT for the past 5 days, but after 10 hours (at least) of dealing with customer service and restorations, it seems it's a third party problem. I still gotta say though.. both ATT and Apple were very quick to suggest me buying a new phone, instead of offering the DFU fix.

My advice to users experiencing the same problem is to restore from a fresh install and load your apps one at a time. I'll be back if any more issues arise with mine. Good Luck!

Please disregard my previous post, as my iPhone is back at it. No ringing or vibrating when an incoming call comes. Whats worse, is that since it has started again, it doesn't ring even when the screen is unlocked. IMHO, we need an update to OS 3.0.1 ASAP. There may be a conflict with one of the apps, but everyone I have installed is from a fresh download. I'm gonna do the previous DFU fix again, and leave all apps uninstalled to see if there is a difference. AHHHH!! This is so frustrating!

I am having this problem recently on the three iphone units that I have. I have two 3G and one 3GS. I upgraded all to OS 3.0.1 to solve the problem. But no success. 90% of the time, calls made from other cell phones are directed to voice mail without the phone ringing or showing missed calls. Some times text messages don't get delivered even though they show as sent from the iphone unit. When I call these iphones from a land line, the failure rate decreases to less than 30% of the time. Today, I tried switching my SIM card from one of the 3G Iphones to my Blackberry. It worked like a charm. Not a single drop. I can call from any cell phone or any land line, the Blackberry rings without any problem. I don't lose important calls or get my family frustrated. *I need to know when Apple will address this major IPHONE problem.* My business can't wait any more.

Problem is, that iPhone can NOT recieve calls, when it's busy with Wifi or 3G. I had the same issue and solved it like this:

1.) Disable push in mail

2.) You also might want to get rid of apps that use push (the ebay app for example) or go online regularly in the background.

3.) Most important: Go into Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

4.) Maybe also do a soft reset (press sleep and home button until the apple logo appears).

My phone now rings again!
(You can, of course, also just disable 3G and rely on EDGE, but who wants to do that?)

After reading that several others with the problem had the eBay app installed, and removing it solved the problem. I tried a slightly different approach. I did not want to lose the ability to check availability of items on eBay so I just went to Settings/Notifications and turned off all options for the eBay app. This solved the problem.

I have had the eBay app installed since August 2008 and have never had this problem before. I installed the version 1.5.0 update a couple of days ago and that corresponds to the time I have had the problem. It is now solved for me.

Thanks to those who flagged the eBay app as a culprit!

Some find out here: -
Scenario 1
Device: iPhone 3Gs, 3.1.2/5.11.7
Country: Malaysia & Singapore
Telcos NOM Mode: All of them running on 002

As long as my iPhone is connected (active session while uploading/downloading) to GPRS/EDGE, any incoming calls will route straight to Voice Mail. 3G/HSDPA - Ok, as both data and voice and run simultaneuosly.

I.e. Data has got higher priority than Voice

Scenario 2
Device: Nokia E72
While uploading/ downloading via GPRS/EDGE, any incoming calls, data session will be halted immediately and phone rings.

Any explain on this?

Excuse my english, thank you.

yeah same update. the interesting point ive discovered is that it is almost definitely how iphone software is configured. Same SIM on an HTC phone with push email configured in exactly the same way on the edge network will interrupt data and send the call through. ONLY on the iphone do I have this issue. Any ideas if this is resolved in 3.1.3?

i have the same problem which has only appeared in last couple of weeks. I have a 3GS 32Gb, with update v3.1.3, and 3 out of 5 incoming calls go straight to voicemail, sms' message take a while to come through.. interestingly every time i called OUT , within seconds of connecting all missed call notifications, sms & voicemail notifications came through. it seems like the phone cannot see the network, but when I connect via an outgoing call) then it retrieves everything.

i spoke with network provider, and they suggested it was a hardware issue. has anyone actually discovered what causes this...?
