"Cannot Get Mail - The connection to the server failed" problem SOLVED

Hi All,

I had been getting a the dreaded "Cannot Get Mail - The connection to the
server failed" error on my first generation iPhone (firmware version 2.1) when syncing e-mail with an Exchange server. After many troubleshooting steps I found the problem was the size of the inbox (9K messages). After archiving older messages into folders the iPhone could again sync.

I hope the helps others.

OK. I have tried the GSBTom fix with no success. I'd love to try the NeoDavid, but I almost need it step-by-step detailed out where to make these changes (in non-IT terms).

I've got an iPhone 3GS and I'm using Hotmail.

I'm geting the same error message as everyone else. Out of the blue it started on my phone, but then it worked again for a day after, and then quit working again. I've tried deleting and adding it as a new account. I tried to go back to what might have in-part caused the problem, and the only thing I had done over the weekend was to turn iCloud on and start backing up to it, but the e-mail did work after that for a couple days. I've tried a couple different Hotmail accounts to see if it was a corrupt e-mail in one account, and both accounts give me the same "Cannot Get Mail" response.

NeoDavid, can you detail out exactly how to make the changes you suggested in your initial "fix" post?

Anyone else have a differnt suggestion - in layman's terms please.

_*Easy Fix for me -*_

I just went to +Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > (_your account name_)+ and then I went to the bottom and deleted my account from my iPhone. Immediately after I just added it back in and it worked.

I think it may have had something to do with the fact that I changed my password to my gmail account on my computer, and didnt do anything to the settings on my iPhone... maybe I just got lucky, but I hope this helps!

@callroots

Problem solved... Thanks!!

Just wanted to confirm that this fix IS right on target. I just did it too and after seeing callroots comment I realized this "cannot receieve email" alert was due to my password change from a week ago. Simply deleting the acct from my phone and then re-entering it worked perfectly. However, I bet just changing the password would work too. Anyway, THANKS!
