Poor sound quality when using Plantronics Voyager 815

Hi guys,

I've bought a Plantronics Voyager 815, and after pairing it with my iPhone 3G it became readily apparent that the other party wasn't hearing me correctly.
The people with whom i've tested this report terrible sound quality and call break up, making it impossible to have a conversation. Although i ear them correctly the sound on the phone is better, also the sound of the headset when connected to other phones is a lot better than when paired with the iPhone.
The problem cannot be the headset because i've tested it with 2 different nokia phones and not only everyone heard me crystal clear as i could hear them better also.
Also reception is not the problem as where i live i have full signal bar at all times with 3.5G network support, and also as soon as i disconnect the headset and return the sound to the phone the sound is great and other people can heard me perfectly.

Do i have a defective iPhone? Or perhaps iPhone only works with the apple headset? (which would really stink because i cant use it 'cause it falls out of my ear)

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!!
Jorge Barquinha

I think that there may be a compatibility problem with the/some iPhones. Mine has the same problem with an 815 and also with my Volvo Bluetooth car-kit. It all works fine on a Nokia but with the iPhone, people can't hear me or say the call keeps breaking up. It's such a pain I'm seriously considering going back to a Nokia as I use the 815 a lot when travelling. Nobody I have spoken to seems to have an answer to this but I'm open to sensible - or even seemingly daft - suggestions for a solution.

I have exactly the same problem using my Jawbone 2, i bought this new headset because i thought it would take care of alle problems. It did not. Then i bought a new iPhone 3G because i thought it would be a defect in my iPhone, it is not.

Now ik have spend a lot of money and still have the same problem.. Is this problem specific to a certain batch or do all iPhones have this problem? Please shed some light on the matter because i don't want to buy another phone. I am a hardcore Apple fan and i spend a lot of money to keep a iPhone..

Please solve my problem!?

Just found this thread, and it's good (in a bad way) to see that I'm not alone.

Within six months, I've exchanged my iPhone 3G three times due to issues with Bluetooth headsets. Within the past four weeks, I've gone through four Jawbone 2, one Motopure H780, and one Plantronics Discovery 665, and all have issues with poor sound quality and noise cancellation not working properly.

I suppose I'm glad to hear that it may be a firmware issue. At least it explains the bad luck I've been having with higher-end headsets.

Does anyone have an update on potential issues with iPhone 3G and bluetooth?

Hello,

I have been facing similar issues as well, although I have managed to narrow-down the culprits as you may read in [this thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1804116&tstart=0]. I have posted a while ago. I have been trying various headsets lately, got a Jabra BT-530 recently, still having problems with the iPhone. As always, the new headset is working perfectly when paired to other phones. I guess Apple should come up with an update to this issue, it's iPhone's biggest flaw so far, AFAIC...

I should add though, that I am very puzzled on the issue, since I am reading reports at the same time from people who have absolutelly no problem with their headsets. Is there any chance iPhones are equiped with different BT chipsets?

I am not too sure if this is affected by BT software stack or RF design...

iPhone 3G with FW 2.x provides Cisco VPN as well as Email support for corporate usage. However, it's weird that business man wouldn't want to use BT headset and talk to people... We are not asking about new feature support, like A2DP, but reliable, stable BT connection ONLY!!

I've read that lots folks spent a lot of money on purchasing many different BT headsets and tried to get it work with iPhone 3G. I myself tried: Plantronics 510/815/855, Sony HBH-DS970/980, Nokia BH-903. None of them can work fine with my iPhone 3G ever! And iPhone 3G even cause BH-903 and DS-980 hang up after pairing or finishing call!!

That's why I don't believe it's just a "SPECIAL CASE". How could a product FOR BUSINESS purpose get this kind of basic function problem?

I hope we will find this issue could be resolved completely with new F/W, like Safari crash problem before. Other than this BT IOT problem, iPhone 3G is really the phone/companion could provide complete solution fulfill my personal and business needs.

dcheng0917,

I am positive that it is a software issue, at least part of the problem, since as demonstrated in my demo call [here|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1804116&tstart=0], it looks like the outgoing volume level is controled by some sort of echo-cancelation algorythm. I don't suppose that RF strength would be that much depended to incoming volume levels... That's the main reason I've opened a ticked [here|http://pleasefixtheiphone.com/problems/view/6330> regarding the various bluetooth BUGs.

I've had some of the same issues as many of you here.

I have gone through the following headsets, with issues of each accompanied below:

- Jawbone 2: I went through three (3) of these headsets. Issues encountered were poor sound quality for the person on the other end of the call, Noise Assassin did not work at all (even with the rubber nib touching my cheek), and the sound quality was not up to Jawbone claims.

- Motorola H680: The sound quality on both ends o the call were horrible. I heard static on my end, and this was after I tried it in several different regions of the city. The caller on the other end reported my voice sounded like it was too muffled.

- Plantronics 815: It was working decently for one night, but then I started hearing a great deal of static. Then it started cutting in and out that same night.

- Jabra BT 8040: This was the best of the bunch, but then it started to go downhill after three weeks of use. Static, poor sound quality, and cutting in and out during calls forced me to, reluctantly, return it. I say reluctant, because it worked the best out of all the Bluetooth headset i tried at the time.

All of these headsets were used in the greater Los Angeles county. My 3G connection was at its fullest, and the phone was never more than two or three feet away from the headset.

Just today, I purchased a Plantronics Discovery 925C. the few calls I've made with it have sounded pretty good. I can post an updated review if anyone is interested. I'm hoping this headset will last more than a week.

Until then, I am convinced it is my iPhone 3G that is having some firmware, or other software issues that prevent the Bluetooth from working properly.
