btw: i charged my 2GB nano to test on a Sat while running errands and cleaning house. it went out in about 5hrs.
A few nights ago I wanted to see exactly how long my Nano battery would last. I didnt keep changing through songs, or keep turning the backlight on..or anything like that, it just played through out the night. So in about 5 hrs the battery was almost gone! Weird. So the next day, I let my Nano charge to completion, (or what i hope was completion) and that night, the nano was on for around 5 hrs again. I thought Apple said battery life is approx. 14 hrs, which realistically I thought to be around 6-8 hrs. Max. So why such a short battery life? Or is it just me?

Almost gone? Did you time it until it shut off completely on its own? The battery indicator is notorious for being inaccurate.

I just used my Nano for two 9 hour flights, and got about 6 hours, so it does not get 14 hours as described. Other than that, I have nothing but compliments for the product. I had a Shuffle and this is light years better than that.
I've also noticed that I can't get the advertised 14 hours. I knew I wasn't getting anywhere near that when I got it last week. So, today I ran an optimal scenario test on it. I charged it all the way up, turned it on, set it to play through my entire collection, no user interaction with the iPod the whole time -- no manual changing of songs, activation of back light, etc. -- and had the volume set to about 1/4. At the end of the test I only got 8 hours out of it -- that's from the time I turned it on to the time the battery died. Now, under that scenario I could understand 11 hours because you're never going to get the advertised battery life, but 8 hours is a bit ridiculous. Are some people just getting duds or is there something wrong with the entire line?
Everyone, here's the scoop: calibrate your battery and battery meter.
It depends on a number of things. I had the same problem with mine when I first got it, but completely discharging and then charging it fully (breaking the battery in) it works fine. the last time I did the test I got 14hrs 17min.
This is with the backlight and equalizer off. I also set the volume 50% and just let it run. If you want the full battery life you are going to have to do a lot of weird things like that. Hope that helped

Exactly. My experience with batteries is that you need to fully charge and run them down a few times before you'll get the best life out of them.
ok, so it didnt die completely, but it was almost out, like no more left int he indicator. my sisters mini gets around 11 hrs. of heavy use, i thought i should be able to get atleast 8 hrs. i bought the nano, speicifically for my flight back home thats gonna last me 2 days! I'll try letting the battery totally die and then recharge, hopefully that'll work
otherwise i LOOOOOVE my nano

You should let it totally die and fully recharge it a few times in a row. This is no guarantee for 14 hrs., but it may help you get closer.
Ya might wanna look into getting a power adaptor to charge on the go.
It's irritating to have a portable music device...that you can't listen too!

I have fully charged and discharged the battery every day since I bought it. Yeah, I use it that much. That's 7 full cycles and I only got 8 hours off a controlled test with the following settings:
Full charged battery
Playing music for the whole test with no user interaction with the iPod
EQ off
volume set at 25%
hold switch on
There must be something wrong with mine. I shall contact support about it. I really hope it's just a dud and not a problem with the line. If so, I'm gonna be really disappointed. It's been an excellent player otherwise.

I got 11.5 hours out of it with user interaction, no backlight, and no EQ. The hold was on and off. This was after 4 or 5 partial charges (the battery was more than half full at charge), and 2 full charges (ran down the nano until it didn't have enough power to operate at all.
Okay, I must have just ended up with a dud. I'll just take it back and get another one when they get the next shipment in.
I got about 12-13 hrs out of mine i was quite pleased first time the pridected life is like the actual life
my sisters mini gets around 11 hrs...
I'm not aware of a mini holding an 11 hour charge
Does your Nano battery die really quickly?
