A few nights ago I wanted to see exactly how long my Nano battery would last. I didnt keep changing through songs, or keep turning the backlight on..or anything like that, it just played through out the night. So in about 5 hrs the battery was almost gone! Weird. So the next day, I let my Nano charge to completion, (or what i hope was completion) and that night, the nano was on for around 5 hrs again. I thought Apple said battery life is approx. 14 hrs, which realistically I thought to be around 6-8 hrs. Max. So why such a short battery life? Or is it just me?

Mine seems like that, but I mean still even though you are not switching through songs and stuff the battery is still going to go down, the Nano is a great product, I could make a guess at what might be taking battery life, the screen could be even though your backlight is not on, the power consumption between a nano and a mini are almost similar, except the nano holds a longer charge, you have not been ripped off either.
Ben
my response was neither authoritative or mocking and it was not intended the way you are stating, but again:
1) the battery replacement plan is for older iPods and NOT for the nano
for some light night reading, here you go:

Benjamin,
What Apple HK told you is wrong. Ask for a letter from their lawyers, and contact Apple Customer Relations in California.

Hi Jeffdc
I understand a bit more why the Apple staff behaves in a very defensive manner. So the battery replacement is never treated as a servie by Apple, it is just a legal settlement of a product defect. Does it have to be treated like that ?
I did try my best to allay the Apple staff's fear that consumers just want their battery to be replaced by the vendor with a fee and who wants to go through all those legal hassels to get a simple task to be done -- just change my battery by Apple at a reasonable price and not an extortionate one.
I believe a lot of consumers including me and dwb do not know that at least right now Apple's policy will not replace your ipod Nano battery.
If your battery dies down within ONE YEAR they will replace a new one for you (in fact very likely just give you a new Nano). But if your Nano battery dies on the 366th day, poor guy you're so unlucky -- please buy a new one at your own with full price. You can pay to subscribe a prolonged service plan for an additional protection covering your battery with additional 6 months.
So it does not need a rocket scientist to logically deduce that Apple figures out your Nano is supposed for regular use within 18 months. Enjoy your Nano well with good sleep within 12 months or 18 months with extra cost.
Hi dwb, I am going to look for third party battery replacement here but the Apple staff warns me that it's your own choice and don't bring it back to Apple. Buy a new one is always their official stance.

as far as I know, there is no battery replacement service in HK. (the worst thing is they don't even provide any alternative for the users there) On the other hand, there are some good places (the third parties) for doing the replacement.
Forget the service in AppleHK.

Ben - Apple's battery replacement program may be controlled regionally, though I do know it is available outside the US. So you may be officially up the creek in Hong Kong though I find it hard to believe.
However your contact is STILL wrong. The battery replacement program includes the mini. As for the Nano - I don't have any trouble believing there is no official program yet. Since the Nano is about a month old, all battery replacements are going to be done under warranty. An official program won't need to be in place for the Nano until mid to late summer 2006.
Regardless, knowing Hong Kong, I don't think you'll have any problem finding an alternative 3rd party replacement program. Heck, in the small town where I live the local PC repair shop does iPod battery replacements for $45.

Hi LY
You are right that Apple HK is absolutely helpless.
This is the first time I use Apple products and need some help. Where can I find some good places for third party battery replacement, Shumshuipo or CausewayBay.
Your tips are much appreciated.

Really get a little confused why Apple makes it so complicated for a simple battery replacement.
Hope you are right that an official program will be in place for the Nano by summer 2006.
I am new with Apple products and really appreciate your advice and is taking active steps to find some good third party ipod service providers here in HK.

One other thing that probably contributes to the Nano seeming to have less batt life than advertised is that when you turn it off, the screen goes blank, but it is sleeping rather than fully off for at least 3-4 hours. If you notice, within 3-4 hours after turning it off, it will instantly turn back on if you press the pause/play symbol......if you let it sit overnight, however, it will have fully turned off, and you must hit the center button and go through the "apple" icon/logo first.
Apple has stated that the 14 hour batt life applies when you just turn it on and leave it on.....that one non-stop session only. If you are turning it on and off, it is still using current during the 3-4 hour sleep mode after you turn it off.

Great debate. I like your response. They (Apple) don't really want another lawsuit; but I can see it happening. Hong Kong users: stand up for youselves; you do have rights.
Forgive me for shouting, but if it doesn't kill you on the phone bills: CONTACT APPLE CALIFORNIA. They may give you some relief.
Thanks jeffdc
That's great !!
I notice that both the new video ipod and Nano are covered by the ipod battery replacement program. Fantastic.
However when I click for "ipod battery service request form" only a limited number of countries are available and HongKong is not shown for selection.
I have called up Apple HK and they need time to check for me.
Anyway, thanks a lot and this is really helpful.
Note for others : Your guided link also point to some pages with good information relate to the ipod batteries. MUST READ
