Does your Nano battery die really quickly?

A few nights ago I wanted to see exactly how long my Nano battery would last. I didnt keep changing through songs, or keep turning the backlight on..or anything like that, it just played through out the night. So in about 5 hrs the battery was almost gone! Weird. So the next day, I let my Nano charge to completion, (or what i hope was completion) and that night, the nano was on for around 5 hrs again. I thought Apple said battery life is approx. 14 hrs, which realistically I thought to be around 6-8 hrs. Max. So why such a short battery life? Or is it just me?

Hi Jeffdc

You can see that both the 5Gen ipod and Nano are shown on the page below

http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/power

So Apple has installed the battery replacement program as a genuine after sales service as all consumers including me have asked for and not only for legal settlements.

I am still waiting for Apple HK to clarify why HK is not included for selection. Apple HK is in real mess and would not dare to talk to me over the phone now. I am waiting for their email answer.

Ben

that page is an all encompassing support page for all iPods

unfortunately you are going to find that the Battery Replacement Program was setup for old iPods (Out-of-warranty Battery Replacement Program)

but you should talk to everyone and gather all the information you can so you are absolutely informed and certain about this

Apple have put on the following web page that they have a $59 battery replacement service

http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/power/

On the top part it says ipods and include 5Gen video ipod and Nano. On the bottom of the same web page they indicate ipod Battery Replacement.

Oh! come on jeffdc, you are saying that Apple is offering the battery replacement service not for the above shown ipod images and tells me that it is the consumers duties to check and not believe the contents shown publicly on the web. If that is the case, then Apple is illegally showing contents intend to mislead the consumers, hah hah there will be tons of lawsuits ahead.

From what being shown on the web page, it is clear Apple is telling the consumers that they are offering 'ipod battery replacement" to the new ipods, the ipod mini and ipod Nano as shown ontop of the web page otherwise it has prima facie case that Apple is trying to mislead the consumers with some service that they don't offer but illegally induce the consumers to buy an Apple ipod reasonably believing that they can replace the batteries after one year with USD59.

Hi Jeffdc

If what being shown on the web page of

http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/power/

Then Apple has the responsibitlity to correct it or remove the misleading contents from their web site otherwise they are legally liable.

This forum should be a place to help ipod Nano users to get the best out of their ipods and help ipod Nano users to protect their consumers rights instead of blaming the users whilst defending Apple blindly.

hi Ben,you can check it up at Shumshuipo's computer mall.
by the way, I am not sure whether nano's battery can be replaced as the battery is sealed on the main board of nano which is different from mini and ipod...

In fact, I do want to know why AppleHK does not provide the battery replacement service for all lines of ipods sold in HK. If my memroy is correct, the only Asian country that provides similar service is Japan.

AFAIK, you get the best battery life if both EQ and Sound Check are turned off. It appears that if either of these features is turned on, extra circuitry in the nano gets turned on. That extra circuitry draws more power from the battery and drains it faster.

The reason for this is that (it seems) Apple does the automatic volume adjustment (Sound Check) and equalization in analog circuitry instead of in digital circuitry. If neither SC or EQ are on, that analog circuity gets shut off and the audio signal is routed around it.

I've also noticed that if I use either EQ or Sound Check, some particularly hot tracks exhibit distortion of audio peaks (clipping). The clipping is completely independent of the volume control setting (the level in the earphones). So it appears there isn't quite enough headroom in the analog signal processing circuitry I mentioned. 😟 In fact, it is that same clipping effect that alerted me to the likelihood that the SC/EQ functions require the audio to pass through extra processing circuitry that isn't present when both functions are turned off. I also know for sure that Apple took this approach in some of their desktop computers, so it would make sense they did it in the nano, too.

Hi LY

Thanks for your information. If I can find reliable third party battery replacement for the Nano, I really won't bother with Apple. However it appears that it is difficult to get one here yet.

I have asked Apple Care HK to clarify their web page

http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/power/

why a battery replacement program is shown publicly on the web page leading the consumers to believe that they can replace their battery with USD59 after one year of use.

if Apple Care HK cannot address this issue properly, then HK ipod Nano users shoudld bring the case to the Consumer Council.

The first two weeks my nano battery seemed to last less than 12 hours. So I decided to try something I read in another thread: keep nano plugged in to usb port after the charged battery signal appears onscreen, for one or two more hours.
This trick has worked so far this last week and now my nano works for 12 to 14 hours (I've kept track of playback time), so I can use it for two days in a row without recharging.
Hope that helps...

3 weeks after i bought my nano, i finally got it to play continuously for more than 14 hours~lesson to be learned: listen to the others and calibrate your nano battery~it's simply: just keep your nano on until the battery drains completely and recharge it to full(keep the usb plugged even if it says charged on your nano); repeat it several times (i did it three times)

BUT, 14+ hours is the CONTINUOUS playtime, meaning that you don't turn off your nano in the middle. I usually listen to it on my way to classes and therefore i turn my nano on and off pretty frequently~as a result, i don't even get close to 10 hours

Isn't the battery a Lithium one? I fly model helicopters with Lithium batteries and the guidance is -never to fully drain a Lithium cell- as this can drastically shorten its life. Unlike NiCads which should be regularly drained fully to avoid 'memory effect', Lithium cells last longer and perform better with regular top-up charges.
