My black and white 1G iPod had a contrast setting, which you could abuse to dim the display; but it would affect the brightness of the illumination itself.
Is there any way of adjusting the brightness of the nano? It's really bright all the time, especially at night. Forgive me if this is no longer an option on the ipod - I jumped from a third gen black and white to the nano!

There's probably no way to adjust brightness on the nano, for sure there is no such setting on my iPod 20G color.

That's too bad because it can be REALLY bright when you are in bed at night and trying not to wake someone up! Maybe some third party company should come out with a night shade for the screen. Last night I used of the socks and this helped but then I couldn't feel around for the controls the way I could with the shuffle.
That's strange since a friend at work brought in his Nano and the screen was dimmed at the time. It then brightened up when he hit a button. Is that just a "screen saver"?
No, he must of had the backlight timer on. This means whenever he doesn't touch an iPod control for more than a specified time, the backlight turns off. As soon as the iPod's controls are touched, the backlight goes back on.

HEAR HERE!! I second that notion.
A dim option would be great for the Nano. I find it is MUCH too bright for use at night, in bed, with a light sleeper next to you 😉
Does Apple listen read this stuff? How can we make feature suggestions?

It isn't in the settings menu?

The contrast setting is no longer available for any iPod with colour display.

Hey,
You probably have your backlight timer set to always on- when the backlight's off, it's not bright at all. Change your backlight settings to "2 seconds" or something.

A broghtness switch (setting) would be a good addition as I find the glare from the screen in a dimly lighted room makes the screen hard to read.
A larger font size setting would also help.
