Using Rosetta Stone online with a Mac

I'm trying to use Rosetta Stone with my mac, but neither safari nor firefox seems to be able to open it. I'm in the Army so I get access to it for free, but have to use it online via shockwave. Whenever I try I get really close to loading the page, then an error comes up saying shockwave failed because it doesn't have an Xtra (FLP Ear), whatever that is. Am I forced to remain monolinguistic?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

I'm in the Air Force and had the same exact problem. download shockwave 11 full and use it to uninstall shockwave. then dl shockwave 10 full and install that. then go into finder; applications; right click safari (or your browser) and open its info. once in there look for a box that says "open using rosetta" (has nothing to do with rosetta stone itself). you need to check that box for version 2, but uncheck it when you get to version 3. then shockwave 10 should work from there.

I'm having trouble with Adobe Shockwave for Rosetta Stone online too. It doesn't work for Safari, Firefox, or Opera. First it says, "Director Player Error: This application requires and Xtra (FLT Ear) that either does not exist or failed to initialize properly. Please make sure the appropriate Xtras are in the Xtras folder(s)."

Then it says, "Shockwave Error: This Shockwave movie has errors that have caused playback problems. Please contact the author of this content regarding this problem. Shockwave is unable to continue."

I really don't have the time to spend hours dealing with this right now as it is relatively low on my priority list, but I hope that the collective Rosetta Stone, Adobe, and Apple geniuses figure out a solution soon!

Ok, I tried the fixes that have been suggested again and I've got it working reasonably well now in Safari. I uninstalled Shockwave 11, and installed the Shockwave 10 FULL installer (not the slim, this was my mistake last time). I no longer get the flt ear error when I use the Rosetta Stone lessons online.

I found instructions here at Rosetta Stone Support.
http://rosettastone.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/rosettastone.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?p_faqid=336&pcreated=1206737031

However, using the 'exit' or 'back' button (I can't remember what it's called- the one with the little guy in a parachute) from the lesson window, it apparently causes Safari to quit. So, don't use that button.

I don't get the error message anymore for Firefox either, but Shockwave doesn't seem to play properly and various images and buttons disappear, which isn't very useful. Maybe others will have better luck. I haven't tried it in Opera yet.

I hope this helps people--I'm AF and was suffering the same problems. I kept installing/uninstalling different versions of shockwave. But whenever I tried opening Rosetta Stone with Safari, I kept getting the FLT Ear statement.....then I opened it with Internet Explorer. The only thing I had to do was allow additional downloads and then allow the movies.

Good luck!

I was having the same problems.

Finally followed all recommended steps in sequence:
1) downloaded FULL shockwave version 11
2) quit safari once shockwave installer was up
3) uninstalled shockwave 11
4) went back to adobe site, downloaded FULL shockwave 10
5) quit safari once shockwave installer was up
6) installed shockwave 10
7) found safari icon in finder, opened "Info", clicked "Open in Rosetta"

When I opened Rosetta again, the system check worked. I had to download some component, and say that I allow permission for movies. But it's working!!

I have a MacBook, OS 10.5.6, running Safari 3.2.1

I just upgraded to osx version 10.5.6. before the upgrade i had rosetta stone working smoothly with safari but since i upgraded i have tried EVERYTHING mentioned in this discussion and nothing works. . Shockwave isn't running. I got an error report that said that this application requires an "Xtra." Support at Rosetta Stone told me to uninstall Shockwave Player 11 and install Shockwave Player 10. I did this and then received another error report that said:

"The page “Rosetta Stone Online” has content of MIME type “application/x-director”, but you don’t have a plug-in installed for this MIME type. A plug-in should be available on this page: http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/

I did this and then it told me to download Shockwave Player 11 again which landed me in the same position I was in originally.

So it's just like a big cycle. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I was in the same boat -- I had Rosetta Stone online working with Safari in Rosetta mode + Shockwave 10, then upgraded my software, and it stopped working. But I think it was the Safari upgrade that made it stop working, not the Mac OS upgrade.

Have you tried Firefox in Rosetta mode? I just did and it works. I'm using Firefox 3.5 + Shockwave 10 + Rosetta mode. Firefox in Rosetta mode is very slow, but it's easy enough to flip that mode on or off with the 'Get Info' menu.

I am still in the same boat -- I just bought 10.5.6, I had a little problem getting it to work, but it finally did. I updated and ended up with 10.5.8 and now it doesn't work. I followed all the instructions...download 11, uninstall 11, download 10 FULL and still nothing.

I did, however, decide to try maleksiuk's suggestion and try firefox. With firefox I successfully reach to the final page! But, before I get a chance to click on the lesson, firefox crashes - - +all the time.+

HELP!!!!!!
