Itunes won't play songs

I'm having trouble with my itunes library. I cannot play songs on it, it doesn't matter what I do, but absolutely nothing will play. I am currently downloading Itunes 8, wondering if the version I'm working off is too old. If anyone can help me that would be great...we need our music!!

hello! I've figured out how to fix this on my machine. If you goto:
Control Panel -> Hardware & Sound -> Sound -> Manage Audio Devices

Select your audio device and click the 'Properties' button. Then goto the 'Advanced' tab and ensure the card is set to the 16-bit 48000hz (DVD Quality) setting. Apply, and restart your programs and it should work! good luck.

@daforce
Just a quick note to say a BIG thanks. 🙂 I had the same problem and your solution fixed it, though I am not sure if it did for the original poster. Thanks thanks! now my students and I can listen to our podcasts again.

(At this moment I'm at work, using iTunes on a Vista Fujitsu Tablet, though my profile indicates otherwise... at home I'm a Mac girl all the way!)

Hi Folks,

I had the same problem -- I'd try to play a song in iTunes but the time would be stuck at 0:00 and nothing would play; none of my other programs could produce any sound either. The problem happened all of the sudden -- I hadn't made any system changes or installed any new programs. As a solution, I tried to uninstall, reinstall, and repair iTunes & Quicktime, as well as change my audio settings, but nothing worked.

However, I was able to make it work with one further tweak. (I'm running Vista on an HP desktop computer. I have a "Realtek High Definition Audio" sound card.)

Go to *Control Panel* --> double click the Sound icon --> select the properties of your default playback device (mine was " Speakers") --> click the " Enhancements" tab --> check the box to "*Disable all sound effects*"

I'm not sure if there is a conflict with the Realtek audio drivers and iTunes/Quicktime, but there are obviously some problems somewhere in these systems and there doesn't seem to be a consistent solution. Different tweaks work for different people. All I can say is -- good luck!!

omg thank you soooooooooooooooooo much. Ive had this problem for a month at least and have been trolling the forums only to find others with the same problems and no solutions. I was in contact with apple and they essentially said they didnt know what the heck was going on and couldnt help me. When I clicked on sound I got two messages that said I had enhancements to my speakers and mics that seemed to be causing problems and did I want to disable those. So I said yes and my itunes magically worked!
