Nano Dock Line-Out isn't working

I just got a new Nano and Nano dock....when trying to connect it to my home stereo with the dock and lin-out connector (using a mini to dual RCA jack adapter), I get absolutely nothing on the stereo. The dock is plugged into the wall with a USB power adapter and shows charging so there is power to the dock.

Other devices into the stero work on those inputs so it is working fine. Are there some option settings somewhere that I have to enable to get the the Nano to enable that line out port on the dock?

I was having the same problem with the dock output. It would only work "sometimes" on both the dock and altec speakers I have. I did the reset the other day and it now seems to be working 100% of the time....though when something is intermittent like that I am never sure. Maybe I had some dirt in the nano connector. Note however, that both situations worked using the mini-plug connector as an option.

Same problem for me...I think Apple should begin to make better quality iPod. I bought two and both have sometimes problems...also the earphones are low quality (both crap on the left) and my girlfriend nano halts often. I think that if we pay a lot for a product it MUST be constructed well, both hardware and software. I am a musician and those are my first iPods and I NOTICE the bugs in software and hardware...What is the sense that 2nd generation would be better? I have to buy a 2nd generation? I must be crazy...and Apple too if it thinks i am...

I think I have figured out what is happening.
I had the same problem, and couldn't understand why the supposedly fixed line level was so extremely low suddenly.

As it turns out it is possible to change the volume of the line out signal using the normal volume control even when the nano is in the dock!

When the nano is placed in the dock the volume is pre-set to the correct one, BUT if you manually turn the volume up to maximum level, then the line out signal is muted!

I guess the volume should really be fixed, or at least not adjustable via the normal wheel, when the nano is in the dock. Why max level mutes line out is anybody's guess...

(I use the new universal dock.)

As I have had this recurring problem (except NO output not just LOW output) I experimented with the nano volume control while docked to see if I could get the result you did. I my case, I did not. Adjusting the volume control while docked (and unlocked) had no effect on a song playing. I am still having the no-output problem on both my ipod dock, and Altec inMotion speaker. No sound whatsoever most of the time when I connect...that is, until I do a RESET. This seems to work every time, but I can't imagine the nano is intended to work this way. This must be a defect...design or otherwise, in the software or hardware. I hope there is a resolution somehow. It's very inconvenient.

WESjr,

I found that plugging my headphones into the nano disabled the sound out through the dock connector. I have to reset the nano before putting it in the sound dock after disconnecting the headphones. I don't think this is supposed to be the way it works, so I'll say it is a bug that Apple will hopefully take care of soon.

Nikki,
I think you are on to something there with the interaction with the headphone jack. I do remember one time in trying to figure out what was going on that I used a mini-plug line-out connector to test my dock. Somehow, after inserting the mini-plug and testing (it always worked) the dock connector was suddenly working again without doing a reset. Definately a bug somewhere.

Just wanted to chime in an say I've noticed this problem as well. In my case, I have the Alpine iPod adapter in my car which uses the dock connector. I had been using the iPod one day with headphones (which I hadn't done since installing the Alpine module) and I noticed that everything worked on the Alpine but I wasn't getting audio. My temporary solution was to plug and then unplug headphones in but it sounds like a simple reset works so I'll try that. Hopefully Apple will release a firmware update soon.
