MacBook Air no audio output device found ???????? *please help*

Dear all,

since yesterday my Mac Book Air can not find audio output device anymore, so no sound.

Its actually strange because i was running the Hardware Test (Boot + D and so on) but it does not show any failure or problem.

Could you please help me? Anybody has any idea?

Thank you
Carsten

Well the previous fix lasted all of 2 hours. Now I have the sound working again by resetting the PRAM. Here's how;

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  6. Release the keys.

We'll see how long this fix lasts...

Just got the problem solved:) at least at the moment..I had the same problem with my mid-2011 MBA since few months ago after I update my OS to yosemite. Soon I had the issue, I read this post and I did all the Bezel preference file, smc...etc stuffs which was all fail (expect I didn't try reinstalling OS X). I left my MBA with no audio and use my bluetooth headphone as an alternate audio output. it is not that ideal but at least it works. I wished OS X EI Capitan could solve the problem but it couldn't. After several attempts of PRAM and SMC reset on the updated OS X, I guess I had accumulated just enough frustration to screw open the case. I surely am inspired by the audio cable method you guys mentioned. I opened the case of my MBA, unplug the speakers from both side and reconnect them again and this god THE SOUND COME BACK! Hope it will last.

I'll admit I don't know anything about anything technological, but it seems to me that this is an energy saving issue: when the computer sleeps, the speaker shuts down. I had the problem for weeks and tried many of the solutions on here, but to no avail. So I went to System Preferences and then to Energy Saver. Under the Power Adapter tab, I changed my settings to turn display off NEVER. But now my speakers never shut off, and when I close the computer, the display does turn off then, but the speakers do not. The battery may not last as long, but it has worked for me.

I just had this problem with my 2012 MacBook Air. Repeatedly plugging in headphones didn't work. I was getting a circle with a line through it when I pushed any of the audio adjustment keys on the keyboard. My computer would try to link to a Bluetooth speaker, but I didn't try and see if it would work.

I didn't move the audio cable, but I opened up the case and unplugged and replugged in the audio cables to the left and right speakers. ifixit's website has a guide for replacing the speakers, but if you don't need to replace them just unplug and replug the cables (don't remove the battery). It started working again immediately.

Macbook Air mid 2013 (My beloved)

Lost all sound about 6 months ago. Tried all the methods mentioned on previous 24 pages, all no no avail, with no installed audio hardware reported, it appeared to be a logic board problem.

Bluetooth speakers worked OK but sometimes a bit scratchy to the Speakers. BT headphones from my phone did not connect. HDMI to TV via Thunderbolt adaptor also worked with 5m cable across the floor to the TV.

Put up with this for 6 months, not worth $600-odd to repair with no real warranty of enduring success.

So just a week before Xmas I bought myself a Lenovo laptop that looks a lot like the new gold macbook. Thin/skinny, 2 C - ports plus 1 USB3 as light as the air, same size, converts to a tablet. Decided I had to learn Windows instead. Still have a house full of macs to replace as they fade.

BUT YESTERDAY A BIG NEW SYSTEM UPDATE INSTALLED (=10.12.2 (16C67), and audio is 100% normal now. Now I have 2 small similar competing laptops, and will have to carry on as planned, and learn Windows instead. Cannot depend on the macbook series any more after 6 months of no sound, so will probably retire all the macs as they fall over with time. Will be a sad but inevitable day sometime in the future.

So advice for now is get the OS update 10.12.2 (16C67) before you decide to replace the old Macbook.

Hi Everyone!

So my laptop stopped working a year ago so I took it to an IT engineer, they said that the motherboard needs replacing. So they replaced the motherboard and it began working again. So when I brought it back home I was playing a video and realised that the sound wasn't working. I tried setting the sound in system preferences, then rebooting it, I feel like I tried everything. So I took it back to the IT guy and he still hasn't done anything to fix it says he needs more time. He said he tried reinstalling the software which did not work so now he said he'll try other ways. Can anyone tell me what else we could do to solve this problem? I don't think the IT guy will be able to fix it.

Thanks guys ^^
