MacBook Air no audio output device found ???????? *please help*

Dear all,

since yesterday my Mac Book Air can not find audio output device anymore, so no sound.

Its actually strange because i was running the Hardware Test (Boot + D and so on) but it does not show any failure or problem.

Could you please help me? Anybody has any idea?

Thank you
Carsten

hey guys i may have figured it out, i had the same problem, but i resolved it, okay first grab an audio cable, go to sound under your system pref then click output. if there is no output at all there thats okay well anyways then plug in your audio cable, adjust the sound a little bit if it shows u have sound, good cuz you have the audio cable in, well then you pull it out, adjust volume a little bit and just keep doing that untill you hear the sound adjustment ding and there you go it is fixed then magicly it will show up in your mac that you have sound from your internal speakers, if that didnt fixit then in the sound settings click on use audi port for: then click output when u have headphones in if that didnt work you should take it in to an IT group at best buy or better yet take it to an apple retail store they may be able to help/do it for you.🙂

Also my MBA (mid 2012) stopped making sound "No Output Devices Found". It happened after I applied the latest upgrade to 10.8.4. I'm sure it's a software problem because I still have startup chimes, and I also have sound when I boot from a Carbon Copy Clone of my previous system.

I tried about anything I could find in this thread and elsewhere:

- PRAM reset

- SMC reset

- Fix Permissions

- Fix harddrive

- Re-apply updates (Combo)

- Delete the bezel preferences

I also noticed that when I try to play a YouTube movie, it freezes after about 10 to 15 seconds.

It's quite frustrating. Of course I'm just out of warranty as well.

I think there must be some kind of software conflict, but I don't know how to find out.

Anyone knows something else I could try?

It was definetly a not perfectly installed 10.8.4. The apple support told me to start the computer wait shortly and hold cmd+R. then there was point reinstalling. I hope it was named like that, it was 2 days ago. but it was quite selftelling. I did that and everything works fine as usuapple 😀. Hope this helps you.

Perheps important to metion: before that I already installed the Combo Update AND afterwards the whole 10.8.4 over the App store again. This didn´t help. It has to be in the RECOVERY mode, as mentioned above !

Good luck !

Yes, unlikely as it semed, this solved this problem on a 2007 (I bought it because they last a long time) imac. I cannot be absolutely certain of the trigger which caused the loss of sound output but the problem certainly arose at about the time I upgraded the operating system to Mountain Lion. Internal speakers continued to work ok.

I used headphones and for what is worth I plugged and unplugged them a couple of times and then (this seemed to be the important bit) adjusted the volume in the system preferences and the sound returned after what has been several weeks without use of a Bose speaker system.

Thankyou rynelandt.

Fixed!

I first tried every solution in this thread, with no success. I reset the PRAM, fixed file permissions (disk utility), rebooted multiple times, plugged in USB-headset, plugged in minijack, and even tried to install the latest combo update (which for some reason fails). The sound device was missing also when i booted into safe mode.

However, I did manage to fix the problem by booting into recovery mode (hold cmd+r while booting), and then simply reinstalling OS X. This doesn't erase or change any user content, so everything will be just as before when the installation is finished. (But as always - do have a backup just in case!) It just reinstalls the system files. And, the sound device problem was fixed. Yay!

Exactly the same to me. No sound, no source. 1st gen MBA, 80 GB.

I tried everything. The SMC. Reinstallation of SL, plugging and unplugging headphones, deleting plist, repair permissions, toying with settings, zap PRAM. Nada. Nothing.

I suspect it's the cable, probably because of overheating placement under the battery, poor design with folding ribbon cable.

Then the hinge broke... Apple is no longer standing behind that problem.

I've stood behind Apple since day one. I have a bushel basket of their products.

We are all getting rotten Apples!!!!

Civix74 was right. I spent 2 hours reinstall OS X last night. After it was done, my mba restarted twice still no speaker. I gave up, went to bed. This morning when I turned on my mba the magical chime came with the boot screen! I turned it off during lunch, and turned it on again. Again the heavenly chime came out from the speaker. It's fixed! Halleluya!
