From about 2 October my MacBook Air developed the same problems as described above: no sound output and (flash) video playback issues.
Pressing the volume buttons on the keyboard flashes up the level indicator on the screen but it does not change, and also a little "O" with a line through it appears underneath. The Sound Preference panel says "No Input Devices Found" and "No Output Devices Found", and the volume slider is grayed out, set a max, with a grayed Mute box ticked.
Flash video on various sites plays only for a second or two before stopping, although the file continues to load in.
The only software I've installed around the same time this problem first occurred was CoolIris. I have since removed it using its Remove option in one of the menus.
I have also had system crashes when trying to wake from sleep. The machine gives the blue screen and either locks up, or freshly reboots to the Login Screen (with previously logged in users now logged out, ie a restart).
I think, but am not 100% certain, that I updated iTunes after the problem first appeared.
Same thing happened to me: no audio, no youtube. Instead of cursing apple, and promising never to buy another mac, I spent $30 on the new ribbon cable (apple part no. 922-8380) and spent the 20 mins. it takes to replace it.
I tried no software fixes. In fact I tried no other fixes of any kind. I now have perfect audio, the audio icon is back, and youtube videos work normally.
Thanks everyone on this forum for working together to figure out the solution to this problem and post it. Those of us out of warranty very much appreciate it. What could have been a headache was just a minor inconvenience.
I agree with the post about the update of I-tunes. That's when my sound dropped out.
My sound card and hardware are generic...so I think it's a software issue.
Everyone not when you updated itunes. See if there is a trend.
Same think happened me the Audio went very low and then stopped on reboot it was completely gone. I did everything thing mentioned in the forums but no joy.
I brought it to the guys in Mactivate (
http://www.mactivate.ie) and they replaced the sound cable. Working fine now and was under Warranty by just a few days 🙂
*Seems like it's a common issue to have to replace the cable, MBA can get pretty hot sometimes even with relatively short usage. Still a great tool for when I'm traveling and presenting.
Paul,
Did you read this apple user discussion thread? Just replace the audio ribbon cable (apple part no. 922-8380) The part costs $30. The solution is easy and inexpensive.
Hi,
Can anyone tell me from where can I get the audio cable that you mention? I looked at ifixit but its out of stock. Is there any other place from where I can buy it?
I have the same problem and I went into the apple store yesterday and they said without warranty $300. Ridiculous, and the guy said this wasn't a common problem. I suggest we all call up apple and complain which I am doing later today.

I have same problem
I have a similar issue, (1) I have no sound from either my internal speaker or from headphones, (2) the volume control does not appear in the menu bar, (3) opening garage band brings up an error code "Core Audio: Selected Driver not found. (-10202)", (4) in iTunes I cannot play songs (the tiny speaker icon to the left of on the song shows volume but the timeline at top does not advance), (5) same youtube issue (appears to start but stops after a second or two), (6) some other video (for example ABC full episode player) will play but no audio.
Exact same here, just got back Macbook Air back from Apple Store, they replaced the logic board, and said it was fixed--husband brought it home-it's STILL got the same problem!!! The stupid Apple store has had this computer almost as much as I have. I have the Apple Care warranty, if it's not good for getting a lemon replaced, what's it good for? Apple needs to replace this POS, I paid too much, what with all the extras, to have to put up with this and the other problems I've had.
Pray that you are still in warranty if not get ready to pay out the rear for the repair. Either that or try to find the cable and replace it yourself if you can find anywhere that actually has the parts in stock.
