Problem with iSync - Nokia 5310 - pictures in contacts

I started adding pictures to my contacts on my Nokia 5310. Now it will not sync with my Mac using iSync. I know you cannot import pictures from the address book, but is there a way of turning just the picture import off?

No, you cannot selectively turn off pictures.

But, I'm not sure this is the problem. iSync completely ignores additional data added to Contacts in the phone (such as pictures, custom ringtones etc.). In fact, because iSync ignores and doesn't sync this data, it often endd us stripping it from the Contact on the phone the next time you sync, so you have to add it all again anyway.

Have you tried clicking "Reset Sync History..." in iSync preferences?

If you remove all the Contact pictures you've added, does it sync again?

Yes I tried the reset earlier. I just removed all the pics and reset again and it works. I added the pictures to my Mac address book, but they transfer to the phone really small, guess I will have to live with it. I still get an error message even though it seems to have synced.

iSync does automatically scale down pictures to what it considers the optimal size for use on the phones display.

It seems as though iSync is choking on the pictures you've added to the phone when syncing back to the Mac - most likely because they're far too big.

Are the pictures the full-resolution of the camera in the phone? If so, then that is definately the problem. Contact pictures don't need to be any bigger than they display on the phone's screen when a call comes in (the phone will also display them quicker if they are the correct size).

I think your only option is to use more suitably sized images.

Michael,

I just returned my 5610 Nokia because of the same problem you're having.

I have tried for four days to hack/download plugins to no avail. The phone was recognized, I can transfer files to and fro... but iSync stalls when trying to sync.

It starts, the blue bar starts rolling, it goes from 4% to 10% and sometimes 15%... and when it gets to "receiving changes" it just stalls for 30 to 60 seconds before failing.

I've reset iSync, the phone, many times. Same issue.

I'm frustrated because I like the phone. I'm not back with my beat up old RAZR which works just fine with iSync and am back shopping until I can figure out how to make this thing work!

Hey everybody, i finally solved the problem!!

It seems that the nokia operating system doesn't like things like letters in the phone numbers field. Inicially, when i first got the phone, it synced all letters that were in number fields from my mac address book to the phone. But everytime thereafter the phone canceled the sync because of these mistakes. I noticed because it always stopped at the same number (read 246 out of 554 contacts on the face of the phone). so i counted down the list of names in the phone to 246 then deleted or edited those contacts to remove the offending characters. I did this repeatedly till all the mistakes were gone. I was also reseting the sync history everytime and I deleted all contacts out of my mac address book so they wouldn't get copied back to the phone. I made a backup of my address book of course, just in case I needed to go back to the orginal.
So look for weird characters that don't belong in their respective fields: mac address book allows it, nokia phonebook won't. 🙂
Hope this helps people!
