Logic freezing when trying to load templates

Let me preface this all by saying that I have owned Logic for years but I mostly work in Pro Tools and Digital Performer. I am very excited about incorporating this program into composing.

Logic freezes whenever I attempt to open a template. I can open an empty project but nothing else. I just had a major crash and re-installed my system, put in the 10.5.5 combo install, re-installed Logic, and updated all the software. This is what happens when I try to open an Orchestral template: the program freezes every time in the exact same place. It is loading the "Basses.exs" file and specifically "KB stac_upbow_mfC4.wav" It just stops there - nothing more. When I try to load the rock template - it freezes immediately. Not sure if this would affect anything but I've also noticed that Logic doesn't alway open my MOL MIDI driver. It seems like it does it every other time.

I haven't even tried to compose anything yet as I figure that since it's not opening correctly, something is not right.

Any ideas?

Which is the actual Sample rate project before opening the Templates?

I have encountered this problem but never with Motu devices when this happens ... Maybe... remember, usually Templates are setted to 44.1 samples rate...

which is your audio interface?
Are you using external High quality clock device?

well..

have you tried by using Built-in audio drivers and/or disconnect your clock device?
try also to delete Logic preferences and reset the MOTU system driver... (delete its preference too!

you are talking about Templates...
But, those are default templates or contains 3rd party plugins setting?

if the templats are made with some 3rd party plugs, try to drag out the plugin from the components (AU plugins) folder...
search for the setting that cause this issue... (I try just to improvise for help you 😉 )
i.e if a RMX multipatched instrument is on your templates i suggest to remove it...

there are many 3rd party plugs that cause issue with Logic Channel Strip function... in that cases is better to save the multi patch by using the RMX or NI saving patch system...

Hi Rosinda,

It could be that this one sample is corrupted, although EXS will simply skip corrupted samples (after displaying an error message). I don't know about Garageband Instruments though.
Since you are on Leopard, you could simply test that by going to the sample in the Finder and playing it directly with the spacebar (Select the sample and hit the spacebar). If it is corrupted, it won't play, and you'll get an error message. To be sure, try all the other samples in this folder as well. It should be here: "YourHD"/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Sampler/Sampler Files/Basses/Basses stac_upbowmf/
Better check all the other samples in there as well.

This is a fresh install of Logic and the templates are the ones that came with Logic - no modifications whatsoever. I do have loads of 3rd party software installed in the computer, everything form NI Komplete 5 to VSL. These seem to have no affect on any of the other programs in my computer. It 's a fresh system install as well. Like I said, it gets part of the way through the orchestral template but freezes immediately on the rock template as well as most others ... strange ...

Hi Rosinda,

You say you can open an empty project only. But you can then build that up without problems?
And what happens when you create a template yourself and open that? Does it load?
And do you get any error messages, or just a seemingly eternal beachball?
If so, have you tried letting it beachball OVERNIGHT?
Or you could also open Activity Monitor (it is in 'yourHD'/Applications/Utilities) when Logic's beachballing, and see if there are processes that are using high CPU %ages. If nothing is really active, AND Logic is reported to be "not responding", you have what I consider a freeze. If some system thingy or the Finder are very busy, you may just have a lengthy (and annoying) 'thaw', most likely having to do with a search action by Logic or EXS, or some indexing activity.

A typical 'not much happening' (the windowservers' presence has to do with me writing mail and making a screenshot. Logic is sitting idly but with plugs active):

Also, is everything PPC & Leopard compatible?
I don't think 3rd party plugs are involved, as they are (obviously) not used by the templates. If the only problem is in opening templates, all points to them being corrupted somehow. If so, they probably are corrupted on your install disk, since you have freshly reinstalled everything to no avail. If you like I could zip a few of mine (also unaltered since installing) and send them to you, so you can see if that indeed is the problem.

Hey Erik,

That's a very nice offer. I don't think this is the case - just because this was all working before my crash and re-install of everything. I did have Logic up and running with no problem. I have not tried the overnight approach - it definitely did get stuck when loading the Orchestral template ... +loading the "Basses.exs" file and specifically "KB stac_upbow_mfC4.wav" It just stops there+ ...

As far as building my own template, I haven;t yet attempted that. Remember, I'm sort of a novice when it comes to Logic. I know my other programs backwards and forwards but Logic is still a bit daunting. It does open from an empty project and I can create tracks - so far I've tried audio and instrument with no problems - haven't gotten very deep yet. I wish this was a quick fix but unfortunately, I'm thinking I may have to re-install... Ugh!

If you think me trying your templates might help, please feel free to shoot them over. Thanks for your time and effort - much appreciated.
