ATV still not appearing as a device in iTunes after upgrade

Hate to beat a dead horse, but after upgrading to iTunes 8.1 and ATV 2.2, my ATV still does not appear in iTunes. I have had ATV for 2+ years and never had a problem with it until the last upgrade to iTunes 8.0 and ATV 2.1. I have been through every troubleshooting suggestion that I have seen, both in the forum and from Apple, but still nothing. My ATV is connected to my network (wirelessly through an Actiontec wireless DSL modem), I can still rent and buy movies, etc. But ATV does not show up as a device, or under preferences/ATV. And unfortunately, as one of the troubleshooting suggestions is to do a factory restore, all my content has been wiped off of my ATV. So now I have a very expensive and white, hot Blockbuster card.

Any further suggestions out there to solve this problem?

I am in exactly the same situation. Upgraded again yesterday to iTunes 8.01 and ATV 2.2 hoping that they finally sorted out the bug. No luck.

I too, have had my ATV for a couple years and this has happened to me almost everytime they release a major upgrade. It has always come down to waiting for a proper fix, or, mysteriously it just starts working one day. It has never been fixed by something suggested in the forums, despite trying them all.

Let's hope!

I have tried for months and I mean tried everything. APPLE TV WILL NOT APPEAR IN MY DEVICE LIST! It used to but after I upgraded the Apple tV software - no dice. The Apple TV works great, I can rent movies play music, look at pictures, etc... but I can't update the #$%^^&^% thing because I can't get it to appear in the device list.

Having the same issue after using my ATV for months.

Have done all the nonsense with opening ports, etc.

Strangely the ATV "works" in so far as I can use YouTube, I can ping it and get a response, and I can see it exists in my router. So its there, its just not hooking up with iTunes.

Coincidentally my i pod touch lost all its content the same day, but before I noticed the problem with ATV.

For your information...we also had the same exact problem. After much trial and error, we discovered a temporary fix.

1) Reset the ATV to factory settings...DON'T UPGRADE THE ATV SOFTWARE!!!
2) Download Latest iTunes update

Our ATV works, syncs normally, and shows up in our device list. There's only one problem: We can't watch the movies because the video format is not recognized. If we update the ATV software, we are able to watch the movies but the ATV fails to show up on the device list and Utube doesn't work (Podcasts work fine, though, and a wireless connection is detected!). So we're having to trade off getting most of the functions to work except for movies.

Hopefully, Apple will provide another ATV update that fixes this. This has worked for us going on 1 week so far. Apple support blames it on the computer or the router, actually the LINKSYS customer support people are excellent at troubleshooting. We're thinking about purchasing the Apple QUICKTIME program to try to use the ATV function; has anyone tried this?

I have 3 Macs at home. Updated ATV and all was fine. Updated iTunes on one of the machines and lost connectivity on that machine halfway through a movie. Didn't lose connectivity right away, but sometime during watching a movie I got a message that the movie format could not be played and connection gone... and have not been able to connect that machine again The movie plays fine from another machine. The other two machines are fine though one of them has updated iTunes and the other not. No idea what causes it but I have spent hours troubleshooting this and can't figure it out.
