Apple is going to have to do something about the scratching

I think Apple is going to have a major problem on their hands when enough of these are sold. They chose a poor material for the Nano and will probably have to change it in the manufacturing process soon. The Nano is a beautiful product and should not have to be covered up just to avoid the slightist scratches from fingernails etc. I bet the Apple stores will soon be required to replace their floor models everyday to keep from turning off the customers. I have treated mine like a king and it already has a few scratches etc. They could at least use the best Lucite they used in the previous models. Only time will tell.

Man. I find this thread fascinating but since I just came in from a close inspection of the rust on my 1988 Ford hatchback, I'm having a hard time persuading myself to take my potential nano-scratch problems seriously enough.

So far I'm storing my nano in the black sack that came with one of my other iPods. It is some kind of funky non-scratching feels-like-soft-paper thing with a drawstring on it. If I didn't have that, I would probably use eyeglass-cleaning tissues to wrap it and then stick it in a plastic sandwich bag. I have only been using my nano on a set of speakers so far. It sounds like we need something like the shuffle case to protect the nano if we want to wear it around the neck.

Anyway from the look of the rust on my vehicle, I should definitely quit dipping into the car fund for iPods. So you all are right and I should take good care of the nano, it might have to last me QUITE awhile.

The scratches people are seeing, not the ones from rubing against keys, coins etc are grease from your fingers. The scratches, ie, hair thin lines, come from your finger prints, if you move your finger in a line it leaves lines of grease, which look like scratches.

A good clean with a non scratching cloth and a good cleaner would remove them, but soon as you touch the ipod again they will reapear. Same as on my psp screen and my phone screen. Not much a player can do!

I put my black Nano in my pocket and walked around for about an hour. The thing was a mess of scratches, front and back when I took it out. I really love the Nano, but the decision to go with a polished back and a soft plastic, highly reflective front means these things will look like crap in just a few days. For the life of me I cannot understand why the back is not brushed and the front either brushed metal or a harder plastic with a matte finish. Frankly, I'm thinking of taking it back to Fry's. Anything that degrades this rapidly under normal use either should come with some protection or a direct warning to handle it with cotton gloves only. At first look it is obvious that the back will be an issue with fingerprints. No biggie. I just did not expect it to be so prone to scratching. With something that obviously had so much engineering put into it, the lack of durability of the finsh is a remarkable oversight.

John,

I'm sorry to hear that your previous post was deleted (assuming it didn't have profanity in it). That is definitely not a proactive move on Apple's part.

They pride themselves on the "awe"-mazing look of their products, so I'm confident a solution will be introduced into the manufacturing process soon.

That doesn't help you too much, though.

Definitely a problem. I'm a first time Apple Customer, this isn't a very good first impression. Ten minutes after opening it, I noticed the scratches...I want a new one. In all seriousness, I would like a new one. I just spent 250 dollars, and it scratched from my hands...

The product is awesome, it looks sleek, and it was just a "I MUST have that!!!" So I got it. And now I'm sad. Though I'm definitely not sad about the quality of sound, and the ease of use. My black nano now looks very beat up, from sitting in my pocket for an hour. It sat on this desk I'm typing at, and the metal corners on the back are now scratched. I don't see how they would make something that sensitive...when it has to be handled daily...but yea...I'm definitely disappointed. 😟

Hey all,

I honestly think people are being a little ridiculous. "MyNanoIsScratched," you said your iPod was in your pocket for an hour, and got scratched. Well, if it's in your pocket, what does it matter what it looks like?

Everyone else, is the nano still as small as it was when you got it? Does it still play music? Interface with iTunes correctly? Feature the awesome user interface? I'd guess not, by the way you're all complaining.

I wiped my Nano with a napkin earlier. bammo! first ultrafine lines. doh! i was cleaning my homemade case, and used the napkin the polish up the back. c'est la vie. i put my case back on, and all is well.

I think this could have all been alleviated had Apple released a case with the Nano. frankly, i am surprised they didn't. i am also a little surprised that Apple would send to the market something that would be scratched so easily. i wonder what the inside of their arm band is going to be made of.

more importantly, i wonder if case manufacturers are taking this issue into consideration when designing their cases.

Apple is going to have to do something about the scratching
