I think Apple is going to have a major problem on their hands when enough of these are sold. They chose a poor material for the Nano and will probably have to change it in the manufacturing process soon. The Nano is a beautiful product and should not have to be covered up just to avoid the slightist scratches from fingernails etc. I bet the Apple stores will soon be required to replace their floor models everyday to keep from turning off the customers. I have treated mine like a king and it already has a few scratches etc. They could at least use the best Lucite they used in the previous models. Only time will tell.

My shuffle scratches easily, and both of my 20 GB iPods scratched. The shuffle gets the abuse in the pocket, while my 20 GB iPod sits back in my Bose sound dock. There are microscratches on the 20 GB iPod by just sitting there. So all iPods scratch easily. I can't see the scratches unless they are in light. To the person saying his iBook doesn't scratch when you put it in your bookbag. The iBook is made out of a different plastic. The type that is bullet resistent. The iBook is a lot more durable then any iPod. You can run over your iBook and Nano though and both will work, but need LCD screen replacements.
I didn't get the microscratches or hazing you are referring to. Did it occur when you applied A or B?

I was using Novus 2.
I was referring to Scott's use of Ice Creme
The hazing occurs because these scratch remover products actually react with the plastic to melt/seal the scratches, hence having to wear gloves. Over time using the scratch remover will react with all the plastic surface slighly melting it and taking away the polished surface
will they really take it back with scratches? i bought mines 5 days ago but i still have it in its protective plastic. i just flipped it so the message "dont steal music" is not blocking the screen. however, even with the plastic on, there are still micro scratches. i will return mine before the 14 day return policy and just wait for the rev b.
another annoying issue is the removing of usb cables. if both usb and headphone is connected, the usb cannot be removed unless the headphone is removed first. this is because of the usb side release locks.
other than the mentioned flaws, the nano gets a 4 of 5 stars.

Actually, both, but primarily A. It might be that you need to look in sunight, or a bright room. In a dark room, the hazing is harder to see. I cannot see any way that Ice Creme can remove the hazing it adds- the mosre you use it, the worse it gets.
Is there anything to clear the hazing?
Apparently if you go into a motorcycle shop or whatever you can get stuff there to take away the hazing effect seen on helmets, dunno if this will work, have read a million and one threads on various boards tonight about scratching.
Until they sort this out I dont think I'll bother. :/

To all people saying "Just live with the scratches", I cannot belive you are saying that. So you would go out and spend money on something that in 1 week will be scratched so bad that it looks like you picked it up off the street? .. How about a nice watch? .. You would be happy with it? Hmmm, don't think so .. I personally recently purchased a 'black' 4 gig nano and it too has gathered many scratches even though I'm very careful about putting other things in my pocket ie keys, coins, etc .. I've tried the iklear solution but it was not very efficient (actually Brasso worked better !!) ..
Just my 2 cents ..

If you concern about scratches, what don't you think about ibook or powerbook or any device which get the same scratches? all finger print, scrathes are just happened whatever you care during normal use. if you like to protect it, why don't you buy case, or skin? all mp3 players are just consumption product. I have 4 ipods. so I don't care slight scraches on them. it is too headaches if you worry about it.
I own a 2nd Gen iPod and just purchased a white nano. I have to agree the nano is very very very easy to scratch. I have been handling mine very carefully and it has scratches across the screen. Very disappointing. The nano is very cool and part of that is the look. Apple put a lot of effort into the design and appearance. It is disappointing that it scratches so easily.
I can't believe I would say this but if I did not have my nano personalized I would of returned it.

Well, poo. Last night I just ordered a black, personalized Nano, before I'd heard anything about this scratching issue. No turning back now, I guess.
Well, at least I am forewarned. I have ordered skins and protective coverings for the screen (from decalgirl?) so that should help. I am not super-picky so I don't think I'll be crestfallen if I get some scratches eventually. But the idea that the clear screen gets so scratched that you can't always see the images well that is wholly unacceptable. I will do what I can to avoid that.
I also speak as a relatively "non-picky" person, in saying that while I assume I will not notice the scratches or get as worked up about them as some, it still doesn't mean that nobody else has any reason to complain. Different things bother different people. Something that wouldn't worry me might justifiably upset someone else, and vice versa. (I add here that at this point I've not seen a Nano, let alone any scratches on one, so I don't know how bad the scratches are, or are not.)

I'm cancelling my order asap.
$250 for something that looks trashed, sounds like designer jeans that are all torn up on purpose, pay more for less.

I have got a powerbook and the alloy is super durable. No scratches after 6 months of use. I know a lot of people with iBooks and nobody of them had a scratchy iBook. I also have the Apple Bluetooth Mouse with the clear shell with white under it and this thing is after months of daily use in my hand not scratched or anything.
After I read these discussions, I will not buy a Nano. Obviously some people have serious problems with scratches -- others don't. Sounds if there went something wrong in production (wrong mixture for the plastic or something).
I will buy one, when the dust settles and the problem is solved. And then, if I get a bad one, I can still return it within 14 days.
We buy Apple also for design, especially the Nano. And they CAN DO BETTER as I point out above. This is inacceptable.

Apple is going to have to do something about the scratching
