I really like Easy Find. I've been using it for several years and it's a great supplement to the Finder's Find. Maybe I'll play with the resolution independence to make it appear larger! In fact, I just did so and it works like a charm. Plus, I used iKey to launch it via Apple-F, displacing the Finder's Find.
However, I don't see how to have it default to searching the current folder either!
I do like how incredibly fast Find is on an Intel Mac vs. an iBook (most everything else seems slower). If only it would default to name and the folder one is looking at!

Just discovered that one can drag a folder to an EasyFind search window to change its focus-- OR, and this is even cooler, one can drag the icon at the top of a window for a folder to the search window to change the focus. That way, if you're within a folder, one can quickly drag the icon in the title bar to EF and change where it's searching. I'll have to see if I can script or automate this with command-F
