disable excel automatic hyperlinks?

I am working with a large Excel file that I have inherited, and when I type in an email address it automatically underlines the text and creates a hyperlink. This is extremely annoying, since whenever I want to edit an address, clicking that cell automatically opens a window for sending a new message in Mail. I have figured out how to disable the link for an individual address/cell, but not how to disable this auto function for typing in new cells. Any suggestions? I would like to be able to turn this function off for this document and also as the default for new documents I create.

powerbook G4, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

I have Excel 2008, and it's in the AutoCorrect preferences at the top of the options. Just make sure the choice about replacing network paths and internet addresses with hyperlinks is not clicked.

Save it as a template, then open that template when you create a new file. I think the bottom hint on this page at Mac OS X Hints will give you the necessary info to create a template file that would be your default. I've not tried it today, but I think I've done it in the past.
