Unable to repair premissions anymore

After a few weeks unable to update from 10.5.4 to 10.5.5 I could finally do it after repairing disk permissions. Now !0.5.5 seems to run without problem, so I did'nt repair permissions again.

Then, I installed security update 2008-007 but it failed. I tought I had to repair permissions to resume the update, but Disk Utility is unable to repair permissions. Disk Warrior 4.1 does not open...

Thanks in advance for your precious advice!

This is the error:
DW fails with "an unexpectected error occurred while attempting to perform
the file operations, error code 2903, -8902".

This was the response from DW Tech Support:
"The error (2903, -8902) may occur when repairing disk permissions in Mac
OS X 10.5.5 (Leopard).

First, uncheck the Repair Permissions feature. This will allow the
Files Test to complete.

To repair permissions, simply use the built-in Disk Utility in the
operating system. All utilities, be it DiskWariror, Disk Utility, or
other third-party software, repair permissions in the exact same manner.

The main DiskWarrior feature, the directory rebuild functionality (this
occurs when you click the REBUILD button) is 100% unaffected by this
problem and completely safe to use".

I'm not even able to check that box, it's more or less grayed out. So I've never gotten an error message because I've never been even able to attempt it. The more I think about it the more I think it's a major screw up for such expensive software.

The OS on the disc is 10.4 isn't it? 10.4 disks can't repair permissions on 10.5 disks. I learned that when I booted off my 10.4.11 HD and tried to run Disk Utility on my 10.5 HD. It won't work.

I think I have to forget DW. Anyway someone went away with my original disc...

I forgot to tell that I used the Apple Hardware Test ... with success. Does it test anything else than memory?

Time Machine. Should I reinstall the 10.5.2 original software that came with the iMac and then restore with TM? If I restore will I lose what I added since I did the updade?

Can I find somewhre the exact moment i did the update (a log somewhere)?

Thank you all!

Sorry, Petitcoune. The Boards were down for a while so I couldn't reply before.
This is going beyond my expertise so I'm afraid you'll have to wait for better minds to weigh in. I would think that you can use Time Machine with or without installing 10.5.2. If you erased your drive now or just overwrote it I would imagine it would work, but wait for confirmation on that. As for reinstalling to an exact point in time, I don't know how that works but it should be possible. It's being suggested that you do an archive and install and then update your OS via Apple or their download page. And then use Time Machine to copy over Apps and such that you had originally. It sounds like a good idea but you should wait to hear from those who made the actual recommendation.

Have you given Apple a call? You can find the appropriate number on this site.

That must have been traumatic for him (and for you). Back in school, thats wonderful. At least I hope he thinks so. 😉

About your Mac... If you can spare the time and the price of gas maybe you should take it in. Call ahead to make an appointment with a "genius" and chances are they can fix it while you wait.

Best of luck,

Steve
