DVD Drive makes noise of ejecting randomly

My mac book pro DVD drive makes EJCTING NOISE every 5-10 mins even though there is no CD/DVD media in it

Any idea why?

Mac Book Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.5), 2.6GHz, 200GB HDD, 15inch LED display

My dad's MBP has always had a noisy and unpredictable optical drive but he put up with it. Recently, it started dry ejecting repeatedly and will not stop. Reboots, PMU / SMC resets - nothing works. I'm a Mac tech and talked him through everything that would normally be associated - not even a reinstall is possible cos the machine won't even boot up now.

I ordered him a new Matsushita drive and he installed it himself (very proud he was!) and.......sadly for some of you.....the issue is still there. He's taken it to the Genius Bar and they say (as they so often do) that the logic board needs to be replaced. I'm completely unconvinced that's the case but since I do all my support with dad over the phone (I live in NZ and he lives in Scotland) I am a bit powerless to take it any further. He's got a new iMac coming and I plan to talk him through connecting the MBP in target disk mode and seeing if we can't sort it out with a reinstall.

Curious issue, hope someone comes up with something cos it's scary that a new optical unit doesn't cure it.
