Keeping 16x9 1440x1080 after using compressor

Trying to compress some HDV footage. Shot with the Canon XH-A1 and using Apple compressor to convert to Photo JPEG. So HDV is 1440x1080 and to get it to keep the 16x9 ratio I can do a compression to 1440x810 or go to 1280x720, but is there a way to keep it 16x9 at the 1440x810? Someone said keep it 4x3 at the 1440x1080 and the editing program will know to make it 16x9.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
john

Hey John,

The information you heard is partly correct. However they did leave something that is very important out.

1440/1080 = 1.33333333 (or 4:3). HOWEVER, the pixel aspect ratio is 3:2 or 1.5. That is crucial to have a correct output from your NLE.

With that said, I would stay in 1440x1080 all the way. Even though 1440x810 is 16x9, your PAR would still be 3:2 so you are rescaling the image (bad for field interpolation).

Or you can go 1280x720 with a PAR of 1:1 (square pixels) BUT the render will be long, as you are changing the pixel dimension AND the resolution.

Staying at 1440x1080, you would not change resolution OR PAR, therefore this will be the most efficient (time wise) workflow, but not ideal for quality.

David - photojpeg is the compression the stock footage company wants HDV in (or motion jpeg, but I hear photojpeg is better - company is www.revostock.com).

Mikey - Let me see if I am following you, keep it at 1440x1080 in 4x3?

I know I don't want to re-output clips from Final Cut and I thought I was doing the right thing be going native. The stock agency does not want 1440x810 or 1280x720. So there is now way to keep it full size for hdv and 16x9. if it is 4x3 then will all NLE's read it the right way?

Sorry to make this confusing. Thought this was going to be simple...

Thanks for your help (keep it coming!)

John
