mini-DVI to mini-Display port connector?

Is Apple releasing a cable that connects mini-dvi to mini-display port?

My company today told me that I will get a new Macbook Pro with a mini-display port built in, but I ordered a cinema display directly from Apple.

I plan to connect the new Macbook Pro to the new cinema display (so I can watch all my TV shows in GLORIOUS HD AND IN C.O.L.O.U.R) but I also want to connect my old black Macbook, and my Mac Pro to the new cinema display. (so other members in my family can use the display on their own macbooks when I'm not using it)

This cable will REALLY help, otherwise, I feel like I just bought a new display for myself.

Here's what's bogus: CinemaView ( http://www.cinemaview.com/support.html) plans on making their own Mac compatible monitors and they plan on introducing a mini DVI to mini DisplayPort adapter. If they can do it, how come Apple can't provide that adapter?

Here's the excerpt from the CinemaView web site:

Q. Is there a DVI adapter for use with older Macs?
A. Yes, we will offer adapters to connect the displays to DVI-D and mini-DVI ports by the time we begin shipping.

Their adapter may not work with the Apple display. They could easily have made their displays accept both DVI and DisplayPort video signals. It would involve very little extra electronics, since they're using standard LCD panels, which are designed to work with DVI signals. In that case, their adapter would just connect the pins of a DVI plug and Mini DisplayPort socket.

(BTW their LCD panels have a narrower viewing angle than Apple's.)

I'm really annoyed too. I've just bought online a 24" display, only to find I can't connect it to my two brand new MacBooks - which happen to be white. This is the text on the display webpage *"The first display made precisely for a MacBook.*
Introducing the 24-inch LED Cinema Display. It doesn’t just expand the screen of your new MacBook, MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. With a built-in iSight camera, mic and speakers, it expands your whole experience. Learn more"
It's simply not true. I rang technical support who tried to sell me a mini-display port to DVI adaptor, until I pointed out that the illustration looked as if it didn't fit my end of the cable. Eventually they admitted that I had been sold a dummy and the information on the webpage was misleading. There is no way to connect a white Macbook and a 24" display. Apple's boast is "plug and play" - not this time.
This display goes back in the morning.

Apple - come on, now.

This is not only poor planning on your part, and questionable customer service, it also goes against your new green initiative. There has never been a proprietary display from Apple like this where older models are not able to connect to it.

By not offering a way to connect older Macs, even those purchased as recently as last year, you are quickening the obsolescence of those machines. It's a display, not a specialized microscope or automobile diagnostic. I should be able to connect it.

Just bought 3 of them for the office. Now I look like an *** and have to return them. Thanks.

I've got a Powerbook G4 (DVI port) and want large monitor for design work. So I went to the Regent's St store to buy the LED display. Thankfully, the (helpful) assistant checked before I bought one and explained there aren't any adaptors yet but that they may release some (no specified date).

I trudged sadly homeward then found this forum of which I've now read about a third. I still can't tell whether there will ever actually be any adaptors for older machines like mine since the video card is supplying an incompatible signal so do I hang on for a few months, or go for a Samsung or similar?

Hi Everyone, my company (Circuit Assembly) has been getting a flood of e-mails about this adapter because, as far as we know, we are the only ones looking into making it. The problem with it is that DVI to Displayport is not a bi-directional technology. While the adapter currently exists when mini displayport is the source and DVI is the sink, it doesn't exist yet in the reverse direction.

This means we've got to design a new PCB board with the adapter for this cable. We realize the demand for it is huge so we're trying to get it done.

In the meantime I created a blog post where interested people could respond and let us know their need for this adapter so that I can push my managers and engineers to get this product going.

If you're interested in giving us your input, our link is:

Even though the price of the monitor is high, I would still buy one, however without the ability to plug it into my existing MBPro, I'll shop elsewhere. I would really love to have a Mac monitor but I can't use a 30"er. Why they don't still have a 20 or 24 that will work with my wonderful MBPro (evidently vintage 2008) is a mystery to me. Maybe someone else will take my money.

I just bought the 24" LED cinema display and was told by a customer service rep. that I could use it with my Imac that has a mini dvi out -- needless to say he was wrong. I think it's ridiculous that Apple didn't account for all the people who have mini dvi or dvi considering that I bought my Imac only six months ago! I really hope they'll release a mini dvi to mini display port adapter soon or at least give us another option other than an outdated, over priced 30" monitor. Apple, you've dropped the ball and have left a lot of loyal customers hanging!

Echoing everyone else's disappointment with this, I can't use it with my less than 2 year old Mac Pro. I have read that many 2007 Mac Pro users are successful with the HD 4870 card, even though it is not "officially" supported. Turns out PCI 2.0 cards can play with a PCI 1.0 bus and the card firmware is both 32-bit and 64-bit compatible. So most likely it would all work.

BUT, like other posters, I am very reluctant to spend $350 for a card, another $30 for an extension cord to get to my floor-mounted Mac Pro, in addition to the display cost.

I keep waiting and hoping Apple will "do something" but if they haven't by now, they probably won't.

Very disappointing...

Atlona Technologies Releases the AT-DP200, DVI to Mini DisplayPort converter for Nearly Every Mac on the Market

Atlona Technologies releases DVI to Mini DisplayPort converter designed to allow use of new Mini-DisplayPort enabled monitors (such as Apple 24’’) on DVI machines
Apple users who purchased their computers before 2009 are running into a wall when considering purchasing an Apple Cinema 24’’ or any of the new Mini DisplayPort monitors.

Mac forums all over the internet are buzzing with angry users all trying to verify if DVI is not compatible with Mini DisplayPort. DVI is not capable of putting out DisplayPort signal, making it impossible to use any of the new displays offered by manufacturers such as Apple, Dell, CinemaView with DVI computers. Going from Mini DisplayPort to DVI is simple, and many products are already on the market that allow this conversion, however there are no products on the market that allow the opposite conversion, until now.

Atlona Technologies has recently developed the first and only conversion box that will convert DVI to Mini DisplayPort while maintaining the displays optimal resolution and HDCP compatibility. Atlona’s new AT-DP200 inputs DVI and outputs Mini DisplayPort signal while passing along all EDID and HDCP information. This device converts while allowing your computer to scale to the optimal resolution offered by your display including 1920 by 1200 or 1280 by 800. The AT-DP200 was put through extensive testing in Apple’s compatibility lab, putting it up against every single Apple computer with a DVI port, and every monitor featuring Mini DisplayPort. Atlona Technologies also put this product through PC interoperability testing with all standard DVI video cards.

This device will allow use of any Mini Display port product with and DVI graphics card, meaning the new 24” Cinema Displays from Apple can be used by users with legacy Macs.

Atlona Technologies manufactures solutions based connectivity products. They are among the leading manufacturers of audio video accessories and converters in the US. Atlona’s full product line covers almost every conceivable solution that one may face in any AV system. "This new product will boost Apple sales for their 24 inch monitors,” says Atlona Product Manager Michael Khain, “where users who purchased before the format change were previously unable to upgrade to the cinema display, now with this new converter their market just got that much bigger.”

The new AT-DP200 DVI to Mini DisplayPort falls right in line with the rest of the bleeding edge products designed to keep the AV world connected. The new AT-DP200 will start shipping mid of September with an MSRP of S179.00.

Just read the press release and updated to MacRumors, here is what I wrote:
So I have been dealing with this issue for a while. and if you are like me you've read every forum, and have seen the same wall. Today I read a press release on google news that gives me a little more than hope:

http://www.macsimumnews.com/index.php/archive/at-dp200is_new_dvi_to_mini_displayport_converter_for_mostmacs/)

So apparently Atlona has made a device to fix Apple's compatability issues with older macs, I bought a MBP in late 2008 thinking that it would last me for a little while with out doing MAJOR upgrades. My only issue is that it does not go on sale for 6 weeks for today (7/30) I know, I called. but for 179 duckettes, I'm buying it.
