I got a new MBP yesterday and I really like it. However, last night I was laying down on my back, with my MBP on my knees, angled. I noticed that if I angled it a little more, the display couldn't keep open and would swing down, not quite closing but to the point where I can't see the screen, as if the display hinge is a little loose. It might be designed that way, to just not have much tension, but I'm not sure. My old MBP and various MBs I have used don't do that. I figure that, if anything, it should be less of an issue with the lighter, thinner, display.
Apple says suck it up - its a feature, not a flaw. The first AppleCare specialist I talked to was wrong - apparently it is not an acknowledged, documented flaw. After the repair tech found no problem with my laptop, I called and was put through to a product specialist. He said the new hinge system is the "clutch" design brought over from the 17" MBP. Nothing they can or will do about until enough people complain (or sue).
Can you give me more information about this case ?
Today I talked to the German Apple-Support (by phone) because of the loose hinge of my new MacBookPro 15” unibody (I bought it at a local gravis store). Apple told me that the loose hinge is normal and that it is designed this way. A Repair is not possible.
When I told them about the case number that you mentioned they said that this does not apply to my Macbook Prom, but It took them about 30 minutes to find out this information.
I supposed it is the same problem that automotive manufacturers have with their platform strategies. One platform for a lot of different models with different weights often cause a lot of warranty costs. One hinge design for a 13" and a 15" notebook ? This can not work properly. That is why I asked if the hinges in the Macbook and the Macbook Pro are the same and this was confirmed by the apple support.
In my opinion the conclusion is that they forgot to adopt the design of the hinges for the heavier display of the MacbookPro. If this is true and if they treat their "pro"-customers this way it was the first and probably the last apple computer that ever I bought.
I am really disappointed and completely confused about:
- What is the specified hinge behaviour ? How should it work ?
- Is a repair is possible ?
Sorry, repair is not possible. You have to live with it this way. I was wery upset too in the beginning, but now I do not think about it. Maybe in the next model, but it will not be a recall on this one.

The new unibody 17" MBP has much tighter hinges than the old 17" and the new 15". I highly recommend that if you're worried about the loose hinges bothering you then you should step up to the 17".
