New MacBook connected to external VGA display screen flash.

Just got the 2.4Ghz yesterday. For home use I've got it connected to a Samsung SyncMaster 2032NW display via the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter. Occasionally the display will go dark for a half-a-second or so and then come back on. It happens randomly, not for hours sometimes and sometimes multiple times over a shorter period of time. There does not seem to be any repeatable action that causes it to happen, it appears to be completely random. This does not happen when I'm using the built-in screen. And I didn't have any problems using the Samsung display with my older MacBook.

Should I take the computer back? Is there something I can do to check the hardware for issues?

I am trying the same setup as duancg. Macbook unibody under vista, close the lid (power settings - do nothing), then use a blue tooth mouse and keyboard and a westinghouse external monitor connected using the mini-display-to-DVI adapter.

I may have a flash now and then, but that doesn't bother me. But, if I leave my desk, and let the sceenersaver come on, the dispaly goes black, and I can't wake the computer up anymore. Even if I open the lid, nothing wakes the computer up and I end up having to hold the power button to restart it.

Anyone have this problem?

Hey guys,

I was having the same problem. My Samsung T260HD sporadically flashed. Sometimes it would only be half the screen and other times it was the whole thing. Someone here suggested that it was a power issue and my symptoms pointed to a bad SNR of either the h-sync of the v-sync signal was not up to par.

I hypothesized that a shorter DVI cable should do the trick. I went from an 8ft cable to a 5ft one and the flashing went away.

Another option the repair would be to purchase a DVI repeater and connect the repeater to the mac with a short cable. I haven't tried this out but maybe someone could and post back...

This fixed it for me. Anyone else have luck with it?

Yup, same here. The firmware upgrade for the Mini DP to VGA adaptor fixed this problems months ago, but since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, the blinking on my external display has been back with a vengeance. I can't get it to sync at all at its full resolution (1680x1050). I can get it to settle down if I use lower resolutions, like 1280x960, but only if the MacBook is open. If I try to wake the computer up while the lid is closed, the external display will not sync, no matter what resolution I use.

I suspect that 10.6 did something to the display drivers.

I've had this problem with my Apple 30" display for about six months. Changing Powerbooks, upgrading OS, and trading in the dual-link cable didn't help. I'm running with version 1.02 of the firmware. I also noticed that the problem seemed to be location-specific: although I repeatably got static and blackouts in each room of the house, everything worked just fine when I took it in to the dealer.

However, thanks to a suggestion from Apple, I have now found a solution that is 90% effective. I installed a Tripp-Lite TL013-ND line conditioner ($200) to filter out line noise, and the static and blackouts have almost disappeared. Before this I had been using a $20 surge protector, but that evidently didn't filter all the noise out of the power supply, and the power supply at my home seems to be unusually noisy compared with the supply at my dealer.

The few blackouts and static bursts that do still occur seem to be caused by radio-frequency interference, and could possibly be eliminated using a grounded Faraday cage, but they are rare enough that I haven't felt the need to try this so far.

Is it normal that apple falls in the same problems that all ready fixed??? i mean, ok new upgrade (snow), but based on what?. As users we can expect new problems but not old one's!!

My new problem. No 1080i in LCD bravia vga output bad profile display detection (before:sony lcd, now: vga display - only low res works). It was just fine in 10.5

(this is my third post about the same thing... i'm kind of disappointed)

I have the same problem with my machine (15" MBP connected via VGA cable to external monitor 22" flashes) -- the problem existed with Leopard and persisted with Snow Leopard.

A Tier 2 tech support guy told me to set the Graphics Performance to "High Performance" (System Preferences --> Energy Saver --> Graphics Performance).

This solved the problem for me, but the machine gets a little hot pretty quickly. I guess it's lesser of the two evils.

Hope this helps you guys too.
Peace.

I have the same problem with a Philips 190B, but I also tried with several other monitors..

I think my biggest issue is that *I can't get the firmware updater to run*, because the devices are not being recognized, so i get an error message that only allows me to retry or quit. *Any body knows a work around for that?*

There are more details in a thread I started before finding this one, here's the link:

I'm having this problem using the Apple Mini Displayport to DVI adapter connected to an NEC MultiSync EA261WM and this is happening more then once per day now. The only thing that fixes it is to disconnect the adapter on both ends and reconnect it and this only works about half the time. Talk about a pain!

When is Apple going to address this problem?
