iPod shuffle locks up, requires reset

This was actually from a different forum, ( Kari Lemons, "interesting" #10, 12:42am Mar 8, 2005 CDT )but since the topic was not aptly named, I thought I may as well bring it up here to catch some traffic.

The problem is the IPS will stop playing periodically (on specific songs, as it turns out) which will require "resetting" the device (switch on-off-on-off-on-off-on-off...)

Not really the worst thing in the world, but say you are 5 songs in ... and it locks up ... you are back on song 1 in exactly the same order, and you can't get past that same song, so enjoy those first 4.

I tracked down one song that was crashing it regularly, although there are many different songs that do crash it. Here is the info on that song.

]Kind: AAC audio file
Size: 917.4 KB
Bit Rate 128 kbps
Sample Rate 44,100 kHz
Date Modified 3/5/05 7:57 PM
Play Count: 1
Last Played: 2/12/05 2:11 PM
Volume: -1.7 dB
Profile: Low Complexity
Channels: stereo
Encoded with: iTunes v4.0.1, QuickTime 6.3
]
Only three things I notice about it immeadiately is
1) it used QuickTime 6.3 ... I'll look into this one
2) I copied the artwork into this one when I ripped it (I don't usually do that, so its at least different than the other songs that do play)
3) the song is under a minute long ... does that matter?
]
Hope that helps. (Perhaps helps them at Apple)

This is ridiculous! The online and phone support have been very kind, providing me w/ lots of info. However, so far, the three people I've APPLE-Chatted and talked to at APPLE didn't mention whether they've hear of this problem. When I was online on APPLE-Chat, I asked the tech twice whether they've heard of this problem, at the end of our conversation. All they did was ask if we could end the Chat session and didn't answer my question!?!?!?!?!

Anyway, this is the problem I've been having:

- Shuffle jams on SPECIFIC songs in "regular" and "shuffle" mode.
- Wouldn't play any songs in "regular" mode (restored the Shuffle and now it plays in regular mode).
- Still jams on the same songs
- Have to turn it off, turn it on to "regular" or "shuffle" mode and wait for the green light to go out, push play and it plays, but NOT the "jam" songs
- Sometimes it won't play other songs unless I FF or REW to them, then it plays them.
- If I FF or REW to one of the "jam" songs it always stalls and doesn't play.

THE "JAM" SONGS:
Phish - Free
Phish - Character Zero
Phish - Swept Away

Interesting eh? All by the same artist and even off the SAME ALBUM!

*This is obviously enough of a problem that there should some kind of alert posted in iTUNES and/or this thread.

If you had searched carefully you would have found a much longer thread about some songs having a problem playing on the Shuffle. You need to contact the iTunes Music Store and give them these song names and they will credit your account and they can check the encoding on that album.

In the meantime, if you want to play them burn them to a CD, remove them from the library, rip them from the CD and put them on the Shuffle. There will be a little lossage, but nothing noticeable on rock music.

I'm having the same issue, but I'm not sure if my problem has to do with any song in particular, regardless of whether it was purchased from iTMS or tracks ripped from CD's.

In SHUFFLE MODE: it plays 4-6 songs, then stops/locks up
After turning it off/on to SHUFFLE MODE: it plays the same 4-6 songs. then stops/locks up.

When I switch modes, the iPS will start playing in the middle of a new track.

In SEQUENTIAL PLAY MODE: it plays 4-6 songs, then stops/locks up
After turning it off/on to SEQUENTIAL PLAY MODE: it plays the same 4-6 songs. then stops/locks up.

Still having this problem after resetting the iPS, and updating the software.
Not sure if it's a hardware or software issue.

1. Make sure your Shuffle has firmware version 1.1. If it does not, use the latest Updater and do an Update, otherwise do a Restore.
2. Check the format of the songs on the Shuffle. It will not play all the same formats that the other iPods do.
3. Try loading the Shuffle with an Autofill and check the box "convert higher bit songs to AAC 128" and see if it works.
4. If one of the songs it is locking up on was downloaded from the iTunes Music Store, see the long thread here about problems with purchased songs.

THIS WORKED FOR ME . . . so far.
Went to the AppleStore today and was lead through the following steps to resolve my iPS lock-up issues:

1. Quit iTunes
Reset your Shuffle (turn it off, wait 5sec, turn it on, wait 5sec, turn it off)
Make sure your Shuffle IS NOT inserted in any USB port.
2. Make sure you've downloaded and installed the most current iPod Updater, found here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ipodupdater20050626_readme.html
3. After the iPod Updater is installed, launch it, if it did not do so automatically: Applications>Utilities>iPod Software Updater>iPod Updater 2005-06-26 (as of this message date).
4. After the Updater has launched (wait about 30 secs), having verified that iTunes is not active/launched, insert the Shuffle (Shuffle power must be off) into the computer's USB port - not the keyboard, if applicable.
5. After the Updater recognizes that the Shuffle is inserted, click the RESTORE button to restore it to factory settings. Wait for the app to complete the process - read all prompts until the original Updater splash screen reappears.
6. Quit the Updater - keeping Shuffle inserted.
7. Launch iTunes
8. Select your Shuffle after it appears in the source column on the left.
9. Click AutoFill to load the Shuffle. After this is completed, properly eject the Shuffle and test it.
I'm not saying that this will work for everyone, but it has worked for me - so far.

Okay, so here's my question...why would any one want a product you have to turn on and off again to get it to work?!

I'm frustrated that I have to turn off and on my $200 MP3 player to get it to work! If I wanted to have a product that did that I would have paid $50 for a Sony MP3 player I could have bought at Walmart!

I bought this shuffle because I knew Apple was a good product. I didn't mind paying a great deal of money for a product that worked well; however, to my surprise, it doesn't! Please tell me that there's a better, longer-lasting solution to this problem BESIDES turing it on, off, on, off, on, off, on!

The worst part about this is I bought this to work out with and I love how the music sounds and moves me to work harder and faster. But, it really bites when I have to stop and turn it on, off, on, off, on, off, on! Talk about getting out of the groove! I bought this to enhance my workouts not become my thumb's workout!

Some body please tell me there's an better way to fixing this!
