iPod shuffle locks up, requires reset

This was actually from a different forum, ( Kari Lemons, "interesting" #10, 12:42am Mar 8, 2005 CDT )but since the topic was not aptly named, I thought I may as well bring it up here to catch some traffic.

The problem is the IPS will stop playing periodically (on specific songs, as it turns out) which will require "resetting" the device (switch on-off-on-off-on-off-on-off...)

Not really the worst thing in the world, but say you are 5 songs in ... and it locks up ... you are back on song 1 in exactly the same order, and you can't get past that same song, so enjoy those first 4.

I tracked down one song that was crashing it regularly, although there are many different songs that do crash it. Here is the info on that song.

]Kind: AAC audio file
Size: 917.4 KB
Bit Rate 128 kbps
Sample Rate 44,100 kHz
Date Modified 3/5/05 7:57 PM
Play Count: 1
Last Played: 2/12/05 2:11 PM
Volume: -1.7 dB
Profile: Low Complexity
Channels: stereo
Encoded with: iTunes v4.0.1, QuickTime 6.3
]
Only three things I notice about it immeadiately is
1) it used QuickTime 6.3 ... I'll look into this one
2) I copied the artwork into this one when I ripped it (I don't usually do that, so its at least different than the other songs that do play)
3) the song is under a minute long ... does that matter?
]
Hope that helps. (Perhaps helps them at Apple)

I'd like to think they are working on this problem. I've asked 3 different 'GENIUSES' and they say that they've never heard of this problem before. I'm confident they're trained in diverting or not answering certian issues to keep from incriminating their products.

While at the AppleStore tonight trying to resolve the issue, another customer sitting next to me was having the same issue. The 'Genius' who assisted us both almost without question exchanged each of our iPS for brand new iPS. I'm now on my 3rd iPS this week (Original iPS > Repair Replacement iPS > New out-of-the-box iPS). At this point, I have to believe this is a software issue that has something to do with the latest iPOD Software Updater, Firmware, iTunes, and / or possibly Quicktime.

After loading the new iPS at the Store on my PBG4, I still have the same issue. So far, I've created two different playlists - one loaded with AAC, the other with Protected AAC (iTMS purchases). The general AAC playlist continues to play. The protected AAC's don't play at all, which leads me to believe it has something to do with the encoding . . . I don't know, I'm leaving it to the techs.

I can't imagine that Apple is not aware of this. Let's just hope something is available to resolve it ASAP.

Many thanks to all who have responded, especially DEGGIE! It's hard to keep a clear head when it's so frustrating. I haven't had any problems w/ my Shuffle since I stopped playing any of the Phish tunes I purchased from the ITMS so I'm going to try to get a refund on them.

Good luck to everyone having this problem. Hopefully we'll see a good, permanent fix to this very soon.

It works (applied Restore)! I also had the problem of my shuffle froze at the 6th song. It fell on the floor a few times so I thought I must have accidentally damaged it. I got the shuffle for free so I thought, oh well, at least it can play up to 6 songs. Now, it is good as new. Thanks!

I have been experiencing this problem on various tracks. I also experienced a new one yesterday....several tracks that I had been playing fine in the morning, magically disappeared in the evening! reset the shuffle...still gone...went to put it in the pc...didnt recognize it, although it was charging, after a restart and some fiddling the suffle connected, and all the tracks were still there!!! very strange. I recently updated the software and updated to Itunes V5. Anyone had this before?

I have had everyone of these problems. It seems to me that if it is a song in the playlist that locks it up, but the song works on my other iPod (3G), then there must be something defective in the IPS chip or firmware.

I am on my second IPS and have had the same issue with both. I tried finding the song, but I really don't have time to troubleshoot all 3000 songs I bought from iTunes to determine which ones cause the lockup. Apple seems good enough to replace the unit, but that doesn't do me any good if it keeps happening on every unit I get replaced.

Love the shuffle, but I can never seem to play more than 15 songs. Isn't worth the price, if I can't sync and play all the music. Does anyone know if the Apple store will just give me a store credit toward a different iPod? Thanks.
