how 'kid friendly' is the shuffle?

I'm thinking about getting the shuffle for my son's 9th birthday. He's a great kid, but pretty bad about looking after his belongings. I wondered if anyone has purchased the shuffle for a child to use and how they have found the durability in a kid's environment?

I wish that Otter would have the shuffle case ready as rumoured (in June) but I haven't seen it on their website. Is the Apple sportcase the best protection (I have read about the problem with the side clips...)

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated - I plan to buy the shuffle at the Toronto Apple Store next week.

Thanks to everyone for all of the helpful advice and encouragement!

I purchased the shuffle for my son's birthday at the end of June along with the sports case (since the otter case wasn't available yet at the time, which is too bad...but)

My son was absolutely delighted with the i-pod, in fact, he has enjoyed it more than any other gift he has received (including his bike!). I think that he really appreciated the trust in him that came along with such a gift. Thanks to Apple, the i-pod's ease of use and durability, I was able to stretch that little bit extra as a parent.

It's great to be able to have confidence in your investment!
