Unstable after RAM upgrade

I installed 4GB of Patriot RAM from Fry's. The specs are:

2 x 2GB, DDR3 PC3 8500

Model: PSD34G1066SK

This is the same set at newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220338&Tpk=psd34G1066SK

During various operations, including SuperDuper, downloading files and watching YouTube, the machine froze and I had to restart by holding down the power button.

I've run memtestosx in single user mode and it didn't turn up any issues.

Should I return the RAM and get a replacement set? Should I go with a different brand?

Thoughts?

after reading these post i hopped that the problem was solved but the patriot ram that i got from fry's few days ago still has the same problem. it seems like it crashes when viewing flash type videos, it's guaranteed if i watch a long flash video it will crash and do it very consistently. the screen does a fuzzy thing and audio loops.

i bought 2 2gig Patriot ram, my computer is aluminum macbook 2ghz. i recommend if you have bought 3rd party ram go to google video or something and play a long video if it doesn't crash i'm sure your ram is ok maybe!?!?

It's unfortunate you are having the problem as well. I would expect after such a relatively long time of apparent ram issues that there would be some sort of response from either the ram manufacturers or Apple itself on the matter. I have been contemplating upgrading my ram, but until I can be at least semi-confident that I wouldn't have to fiddle and muck about (exact reason for deciding to switch over to Apple), I will just have to wait.

No, the problem is using ram not designed for the MacBook. People need to stop using the cheapest possible ram in hopes that it works and then complaining when it does not.

I have used mushkin RAM for a week now with 0 problems and recommend it.

It is $110 at the time of this post and worked out of the box in a Macbook aluminum. Make sure you have the latest firmware and OS update.

I have no crashes, performance is improved and it wakes from sleep just fine. best ofg all, it sees all 4 GB

FYI, if you clicked into the link you provided above: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146878 , you would see there's one comment saying it is not working with MBP.
Also FYI, not everybody's getting problem with their memory sticks. It is possible for the same pair of sticks not working on one macbook but not working on any other ones.

Not really concerned about MBP (this is after all the macbook 2008 forum 😉 )

It is not really likely that one manufacturer's RAM is that unstable. This could be a case of the 2.0 model line not being manufactured along the same lines as the 2.4. It could also be the vendor selling the Macbooks. I bought mine directly from and Apple Store and have had no problems.

Most likely this is a case of either a manufacturer like OWC using different RAM manufacturers and pawning it off as the same brand. I am also assuming the majority of people having issues still are either using the wrong speed, voltage, timing, and latency of RAM or not following the recommendations and updating software.

ok im happy to report that another set of ram that i purchased works fine. interestingly the ram that i got from OWC is the same ram that Antoniuk purchased, the Mushkin RAM and if you look at the labeling the chips is from NANYA, the ones I got from OWC was NANYA as well, it looks the same and the part number that you screenshot is the same as well. so OWC as well as Mushkin just resells sells these Macbook rams with their own label. i did my test that i know can guarantee freezes, i sat through 2 hours of Charlie Rose flash video programs on Google and they all played fine. this was while doing some work with lots of apps open at the same time like CS4 Photoshop, Illustrator, Parallels Win XP and looking at some random websites to stress the computer to make it crash. fortunately nothing weird happened, also this saved me some money since the first set of ram i got wasn't cheap.

I still believe this is a small number of users. It should be added by everyone experiencing the issue the following:

The make and serial number of the ram as well as the the serial number of the system with complete specs. This could be a very small batch of Macbooks that are bad.

I was able to not only play vidoe and gmaes that would and should crash if unstable but installed Windows 7 via Parallels 4 without issue.

I have been keeping up with updates to the OS.
