Unstable after RAM upgrade

I installed 4GB of Patriot RAM from Fry's. The specs are:

2 x 2GB, DDR3 PC3 8500

Model: PSD34G1066SK

This is the same set at newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220338&Tpk=psd34G1066SK

During various operations, including SuperDuper, downloading files and watching YouTube, the machine froze and I had to restart by holding down the power button.

I've run memtestosx in single user mode and it didn't turn up any issues.

Should I return the RAM and get a replacement set? Should I go with a different brand?

Thoughts?

Sorry Antoniuk. The fact that the 4GB is recognized doesn't mean that it will function normally. My other MB (before Apple took it to do research on it with the third-party RAM in early November) fully recognized the 4GB of RAM. However, it would freeze just as the rest of these posters are saying. It starts up fine, checks out on RAM hardware tests, and seems to have no issues for seemingly guaranteed compatible chips until you use it. It froze randomly, two sets of chips froze the computer, and works fine with 3GB (2 of third party and 1 of the original). I can't speak to whether or not the firmware updates would fix it as this happened before the firmware updates, but from what others say it made no difference for them and are doomed into perpetual RMAs.

Though this isn't an issue for me anymore as Apple replaced my computer and gave me a free upgrade to 4GB of Apple RAM in exchange for my OWC RAM and old computer.

I recently installed 2x2GB 1066 MHz DDR3 RAM into my machine, (Macbook Pro, Late 2008). My computer recognized the RAM successfully, and the increased performance was noticeable. However, when I insert a disk into my disk drive, the disk is pulled in, (as usual), but when the disk is inside a strange noise is repeatedly emitted, and I have to hold the eject button for a few seconds until the disk is ejected. The disk is not recognized by the OS. Also, my iSight camera is not recognized. These are the only issues I see so far, but I worry of more to reveal themselves.

I want to reinstall my drivers, but the disk drive is not cooperating...

i just received my order of a 2 x 2gb kit from Ramjet. the modules are made by Transcend using Samsung (SEC) chips with all major specs being the same as the originals (DDR3, 1066MHz, CL7).

in my macbook were Crucial modules with Micron chips, same specs as above, but in a 2 x 1gb config, obviously.

everything booted up fine and so far all is good. gonna burn them in with some photoshop renders and see how it goes from there.

Yes it does, that is exactly what it means. The fact that a select few people with certain macbooks from certain manufacturing plants had an issue with 4 GB of ram does not mean the vast majority of us do. Like any product, if it does not work, get support from the manufacturer.

My RAM worked fine out of the box and is I think indicative of the majority (those who do not post here becasue they have no reason to).

Saying this is a flaw in macbooks and generalizing it is false and has nothing to do with Apple as a whole.

MacBook5,1 - unibody 13 inch 2.4Ghz/2GB/250GB Drive upgraded to 4GB for now, all works fine. Games play for hours, mac has been on for days without any reboots, this includes a lot of adobe rendering...everything seems fine with the usual Crucial memory. Next is to try the 6GB RAM limit on the unibody macs running NVIDIAs chipset.

Macbook 2.4Ghz bought 12/21, RAM upgrade 2 x 2Gb from OWC installed 12/28, used daily without problems until 1/22, when repeatedly froze, required powering down, frequently wouldn't restart until started in safe mode. Never stayed on more than a few minutes . Tried Apple Care (reset PRAM, SMC, )Techtools (all tested good many times), Disk Utility, all with no success. Computer is dead for now until we get back home and reinstall original 2 Gb Apple ram. OWC tells me that this is an Apple problem and even Apple ram fails. If original ram works don't know if OWC will refund or not. First problem I've had with them in 20 years of upgrading ram in all my computers.

Almost one week now and I encountered my first issue tonight. I closed the macbook lid to step away for 10-15 minutes. Upon my return the macbook would not awake from sleep. I stared at a black screen with a movable mouse cursor for a good 10 minutes before I decided to power down the system. We'll see if any other issues arise.

Are you guys using the Apple Hardware Test or any other testing program to figure out if stuff works at all, or just going by stability?

I just got my MB and 4GB of RAM from OWC. It seems to run great. I left it running over night with Spore running and it never froze or anything. But the Apple Hardware Test and memtest osx both get tons of errors with 4GB in there.
