No External Speaker Sound on iPod Touch 2G and No Music

I have an almost brand new iPod Touch 2G (I week old). The external speaker worked just fine until today when I turned it on. The headphones are not plugged in (the sound through the headphones is great). After turning it off and on a couple of times, resetting it and giving it a "hard" restart the speaker worked for about 10 seconds then nothing.

Another thing happened at the same time (probably related): all of my music is gone. The podcasts are still there as are the applications, but no music. I was hoping it would appear when I plugged the ipod into my computer and started iTunes, but there was still no music.

The ipod is:
charged
has not been dropped or mishandled in any way

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Have you tried restoring it?

I also have just purchased an iPod Touch 16Gig 2G and bought a home docking station with external speakers, alarm clock, etc. No Sound comes though the dock and there is no control of the iPod from the device, it does charge the iPod though. I have been to several electronics stores and nobody can tell me why no control or sound comes through ANY of the devices we tried (we tried all the display models, about a dozen). Can't figure out what to do next. Internal speaker works fine, headphones work fine, everything else works fine. I'm just recapping the original posters question as it seems that is exactly the same issue I'm having. Seems like it went off topic to the original question of why the external issue is happening.
