Sleep Issue - New MacBook Pro

Just picked up a new MacBook Pro last night. Seems like a very nice machine (coming from a rev B, 1st gen MBP). An oddity, though. When closing the lid to put it in sleep mode it seems to awaken for a few seconds every 45 seconds. There will be an audible bzz-bzzzt (as if the hard drive spun briefly), then the apple logo light built into the lid illuminates for a few seconds. It then extinguishes and 45 seconds later the pattern repeats.

I'm not seeing anything in Energy Saver settings to tweak for this. Any ideas?

+1: Same issue here (waking & not waking) - nothing further to add apart from that I've never an an electrical appliance that wasn't an actual heating device get that hot (ie hard to hold w/out mittens). Not to be melodramatic, but in my case at least we might be getting into fire-risk territory.

- just wanted to register another voice in the fracas. 🙂

I've noticed this stopped my problem from occurring. I never had a sleep issue until I used a USB mouse one day. I closed the lid before disconnecting the USB mouse and the sleep issues started. I whipped out a stopwatch and every 15 seconds exactly, it made the CD-ROM spin and the apple logo lit up, then the logo went dark again. I sat and watched it do that same thing every 15 seconds. I then opened the lid, plugged the USB mouse back in, waited a few seconds, disconnected the USB mouse again, then finally close the lid. The sleep issues stopped and the MBP stays restful.

I'd like to report a success: I've been careful to remove my USB-based ExpressCard broadband modem before I close the lid, and have not had the problem again.

I installed the latest firmware and software updates. I still have the black screen problem -- that is if I plug in, or unplug, a USB device while the computer is sleeping with the lid closed, it wakes up but when I open the lid, the LCD screen is black.

I have an Apple Studio Display connected (via DVI to ADC and DVI to mini adapters) and the Studio Display screen lights up when the computer awakens. That allows me to open the system preferences and select "Displays" then select "Detect Displays" and then the laptop's screen comes back to life.

What you are describing is perfectly normal. This is how you use the Mac in "clamshell" mode. By closing the lid and putting the notebook to sleep followed by plugging and/or unplugging a USB device, you are forcing it to wake up in clamshell mode. The LCD will not work until you put it to sleep again or restart the notebook.

The actual problem most of us are having is when the notebook wakes up when we do not want it to. Most often it happens when it is least expected such as in a briefcase or backpack which ultimately drains the battery and causes the notebook to get extremely hot.

I have installed both updates as listed above and I really hope this puts an end to this very irritating and frustrating problem.
