Sleep Issue - New MacBook Pro

Just picked up a new MacBook Pro last night. Seems like a very nice machine (coming from a rev B, 1st gen MBP). An oddity, though. When closing the lid to put it in sleep mode it seems to awaken for a few seconds every 45 seconds. There will be an audible bzz-bzzzt (as if the hard drive spun briefly), then the apple logo light built into the lid illuminates for a few seconds. It then extinguishes and 45 seconds later the pattern repeats.

I'm not seeing anything in Energy Saver settings to tweak for this. Any ideas?

Ok - these laptops really don't like waking up. Last night something new happened - I opened my laptop (from sleep), the screen came up - looked like it was going to work, then it faded to black/transparrent and a message came up saying "you must restart your computer. hold the power button or press reset." in 3 different languages. great.
Did that, and now Entourage has shat itself.

Have you looked at the console to see if it has any error messages? Things I've done in the past with other units has been to:

1) delete /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
2) delete /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist

(#2 may not exist if you have never used the 'scheduled wake up/sleep' in the energy saver menu

After you delete both, you will lose all your settings for 'sleep after x minutes on battery' and stuff like that. Just go back to the system preferences/energy saver menu and put in your settings again.
(PS. MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE NOT SYNCING THE PREFERENCES WITH MOBILEME, at least for now, otherwise your preferences file may re-appear before you fix things!)

I also reset my SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411
MacBook, MacBook Pro

1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
3. Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
4. Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
5. Press the Power button to restart the computer.

This is happening to me too, I'm trying the SMC reset.

I'm a little surprised by the hysteria. It's unlikely that anyone's computer will be 'irredeemably wounded" by a few hot laptop episodes. It's almost certainly a preferences issue, because it appears and disappears over multiple sleep cycles.

It is annoying, but I am sure Apple will fix it. If they are replacing this many machines they are certainly working on it.

I'm a little disappointed though. One user said his machine got hotter than Scarlet Johannsen. Mine only got as hot as Michelle Monoghan. The Genius at the Apple Store said that this was within spec, but I am still disappointed.

Not necessarily. The other day i was in the sunshine, and I noticed with the light, that there were outline prints made in the dust on my screen, shaped in the pattern of about 4 keys in a row from the keyboard. This could indicate what someone mentioned earlier, that it could be the screen pressing the keys on the keyboard which wakes the computer from sleep.
I think the keys might have been the SDF keys.

Just got my new 15. This has happened to me 3 times now.

I use a Pantech USB modem from Verizon and I use a Western Digital My Book drive with TimeMachine. Neither are connected when this occurs but at least one has been connected prior to this occuring. I always use the "Modem Status" menu to shut the Pantech USB modem down. I just noticed that it seems to see a ghost modem as it is now not plugged in but I can attempt to connect (and fail).

After it pulled the "sleepwalking" trick the first time, I began to manually go into the Apple menu sleep the machine and then close the lid. A few minutes to few seconds later, the Apple light comes on and it wakes up. Tonight it woke up in my bag and was on long enough to drain the battery from 75% to 14% ... the fans were blowing so hard I heard them in the closed bag which alerted me to the issue.

I turned off my "wake on bluetooth" as suggested here and we will see.

Sleep means sleep! (like "no" means "no") Not impressed with this endemic MacBook problem. Might not be same problem since the first Intel book... but is definitely the same symptom.

I have similar not sleeping and extremely hot MBP (late 2008) initially. It happened twice since I got it about a month ago. It hasn't happened since. Now I have a new problem... it refuses to wake up. I close the lid to go out to the kitchen so my kitties don't step on the keys, when I return 5 mins later, and open the lid, it is always the same, black screen, no sound of the hard drive waking up. I am close to bringing it back to Apple Store!!! I have reset PRAM (whatever they call that now) and it hasn't fix the problem. Fixed the permissions, no help. Hubby bought the other MBP, and he had NO issues. AARRGGHH...

Looks like I am far from being alone with this problem. Initially my MBP suffered from both problems described here (not waking up from opening the lid and also not staying asleep). I managed to fix the first problem by doing a PRAM and NVRAM reset and that has settled it for more than a week now.

However, it still doesn't want to stay asleep. I tried everything, alas to no avail. Today I installed the DeepSleep widget, changed the settings to Quick sleep when closing the lid and let it to Deep for Widget Sleep mode. It seemed to work, I closed the lid and I could almost hear my MBP snoring. I left it for ~10 minutes and all was good.... until I touched it to put it in my bag. As soon as it moved it woke up, the LED stopped blinking. I have noticed this several times before that as soon as I move it I hear that clicking sound (from either the DVD player or the HD, not sure) and it wakes up.

Has anyboby else noticed this? Could it be related to the motion sensor?

Just a thought but unfortunately still no solution to this bugging problem that seems to haunt many of us "happy" owner of a brand new MBP...

This problem just started for me yesterday morning. (I've had the MacBook Pro for about a month.) Something that I'd like to mention is that it only started after I left my MBP asleep overnight, which I had never done before; I always shut it down before going to bed. I don't know why this would be related to the problem, but I doubt it's a sheer coincidence. Regardless, this is a very annoying problem, especially as a college student who is constantly moving to a different part of campus. I have to shut down and restart every time I go to a different building. :-/ Hopefully Apple remedies this problem soon...

The main difference would be that overnight, the computer would be asleep long enough to enter safe sleep mode, which would write the contents of memory to your hard disk and go into deep sleep, thus not powering live memory as I understand it.

Last I paid any attention to this mode of sleep, it was the factory default, and kicked on after an hour or two.

I'm having a weird issue related to this I think. I closed my lid and let it shut down and start blinking, but had forgot to unplug my iPhone from the USB port. I unplugged that and the power cord and put it in my backpack and when I got to work the computer was on (solid light), but I can't get the screen to turn on when I use the built-in keyboard/trackpad. Is there a way I can get it back without just holding down the power button until it shuts completely off and loses the work I hadn't saved?
