Sleep Issue - New MacBook Pro

Just picked up a new MacBook Pro last night. Seems like a very nice machine (coming from a rev B, 1st gen MBP). An oddity, though. When closing the lid to put it in sleep mode it seems to awaken for a few seconds every 45 seconds. There will be an audible bzz-bzzzt (as if the hard drive spun briefly), then the apple logo light built into the lid illuminates for a few seconds. It then extinguishes and 45 seconds later the pattern repeats.

I'm not seeing anything in Energy Saver settings to tweak for this. Any ideas?

I just ran system update and so far with brief tests, it does appear to fix the problem... at least from what I saw. At first, it made things worse. With my 3G card and Iphone plugged in, the machine would wake from sleep after roughly 5 seconds.

Once I unplugged those it appeared to hold in sleep relatively well. I'll try to get more testing time in, but it's not very exciting using your only day off to stare at a closed notebook.

It didn't solve it 😟 I get this:

This latest firmeware update has not changed anything for me. Wake up issues remain.... I decided to download and use the SmartSleep software and set it on hibernate only. Takes longer to wake up but at least it will not burn my house down or melt in my backpack...
What a let down from Apple, it looks like they have no idea what is causing this. Big recall to come? Look at that share price heading sub-100$!

Hi, every one. I'm having the same problem too. I check the console and it said

1. "Wake reason = OHC1"
2. System Wake
3. Previous Sleep Cause: 5
4. USB (OHCI) :Port 5 on bus 0x4 has remote wakeup from some device

i got this same message every time i check with console when my Macbook Pro wakeup by itself. I put my MacBook Pro to sleep with and without usb mouse connected. Turn on and off Airport, TimeCapsule. None of them work.

i also notice that every time before it wake up the superdrive making a sound (like trying to load disc in). Now, I'm trying to identify which USB port is "Port 5". Does anyone know where i get the information?

Thanks

Here what i found out so far about port that wake up mac, and this is embarrassing, the problem i post today happened when i use the Apple remote with the ipod while mac is in sleep mode.

port 6 on bus 0x4 : wake reason = OHC1 = keyboard
port 6 on bus 0x4 : wake reason = PWRB = Power button
port 2 on bus 0x6 : wake reason = OHC2 = mouse (usb next to Firewire 800 port)
port 1 on bus 0x4 : wake reason = OHC1= mouse (usb next to mini display port)
port 5 on bus 0x4 : wake reason = OHC1 = Apple remote
port 1 on bus 0x4 : wake reason = EC LID0 = Open lid
no port report : wake reason = OHC1 = change usb port

I am seeing the same insomnia problems as everyone else here. I have the new unibody MacBook. Here are the things that I've found:

1) Turning off Bluetooth does not fix the problem.
2) Resetting the SMC (taking out battery and unplugging power, turning off computer, restarting computer 3X with Command-Option-P-R) does not fix the problem.
3) USB wireless mouse and keyboard receiver is plugged into the USB port when the computer goes to sleep.
4) Console log shows that laptop is woken up by OCH1.
5) Never used migration assistant on the laptop.
6) Installing 10.5.6 does not fix the problem.
7) The hibernate mode is set to 3. I didn't get around to trying mode 0 yet.

The one thing that seems to may fix the problem is to unplug the USB receiver before shutting the lid. That seems to make it sleep longer in my short testing... will need to wait and see if this permanently fixes the problem or if it resurfaces.

I have seemingly received 2 updates to firmware since posting my original message. I manually applied the first update and then later during a Software Update, another one came in. I did not pay close attention so apologies to all.

After applying the first update to firmware, the problem remained. In my case it was most definitely related to the bluetooth wake feature. I could turn it off and the main problem went away. Turn it back on and the problem came back. So I theorized...

What if the wake on bluetooth was not filtering known devices or device types but waking on any bluetooth probe? Somebody with a blackberry passing by with bluetooth active and "hello!" from the Mac? Not sure, have not investigated how the bluetooth listening mechanism works on a sleeping mac but interesting idea no?

Second theory, if bluetooth wakes whenever a known device puts out a bluetooth probe signal of some sort... how many here have tried to bind your iPhone to the Mac to see if anything worked (oh, like wireless dialing from the phone book like the Sony or Nokias do?) The wake up interval is suspiciously similar to the static interval my iPhone causes when too close to a normal telephone or set of speakers... Hmmm.

All theory, am too busy right now to do the legwork.

But for the record, since turning my wake on bluetooth off after the first firmware updated did not fix this, I have not had my 15" unibody sleep walk. I will test and if the bluetooth is the issue, I will return it to the Apple store for a new one because it is unacceptable to have sleeping disorders (this is one of several really) so late in the product lifecycle.

My powerbook still wakes up occasionally and has a fully black screen and beeps when I type. This has been a plague of the powerbooks *and* macbooks since after the PowerBook Duo which did not have the issue.

Dec 30, 2008 5:57 PM in response to Jeffrey Hughes

Don't know if this helps anyone but my new MacBook Pro 15" wasn't going to sleep automatically even with the settings set to sleep after one minute so I did a clean install of leopard and worked all the way back upto 10.5.6 and it worked fine until I started HotSpotshield. Then it wouldn't go to sleep anymore. (It would go to sleep when i cloesed the lid but not if left idle). I quit Hotspotshield and lo and behold it went to sleep on it's own.
You have to quit the program not just disconnect from the server and also force quit the ajaxserver. I'm not sure why it may have something to do with the ajaxserver not responding.

I hope this may help.
