Sleep Issue - New MacBook Pro

Just picked up a new MacBook Pro last night. Seems like a very nice machine (coming from a rev B, 1st gen MBP). An oddity, though. When closing the lid to put it in sleep mode it seems to awaken for a few seconds every 45 seconds. There will be an audible bzz-bzzzt (as if the hard drive spun briefly), then the apple logo light built into the lid illuminates for a few seconds. It then extinguishes and 45 seconds later the pattern repeats.

I'm not seeing anything in Energy Saver settings to tweak for this. Any ideas?

I just got my MBP on dec 23rd -- was delivered in my bed it was a wonderful morning!! ok i to experienced the exact same mac sleep disorder as described in this post!

Here is a WORKAROUND to this problem

open terminal window and type in
pmset -g | grep hibernatemode

it is probably set to 3 -- that is the problem
i set mine to be mode 1 -- this results on systematic Hibernation -- not instant wake (4gig mem take a bit of time to restore) but at least it SLEEPS and i can travel without having to Shutdown)
to change modes just do

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 1

this is how mine is set now,,, and it sleep even with all my external devices plugged in ... if i unplug them while it is sleeping i just get a msg after it wake saying some device was not properly removed but it wakes up just fine

enjoy the workaround until Apple fix this issue.

I, too, am having this sleep cycle problem. I have noticed two issues:

1. I put the MacBook Pro to sleep, and it wakes in my bag on the way to work... comes out boiling lava hot. Today was the second time that happened, actually, and it was SO hot that the operating system crashed. I imagine it was due to the CPU overheating. I really hope I didn't damage anything.

2. Sometimes the laptop never wakes after going to sleep. It just sits there at a black screen, even though the keyboard lights up and you hear the optical drive cycle.

So, as for (1), both times it happened I had my Logitech VX Nano mouse receiver connected via the USB drive. I am guessing this is the culprit, under the assumption that the mouse moved around in my bag and the computer interpreted this as me wanting to wake the machine (which I think is patently stupid, since the lid was still closed). Along the same lines, if I put my MacBook into sleep mode and then disconnect a USB device it wakes the machine (which I also think is patently stupid), so I think this reinforces the idea of peripherals causing the problem. This is unacceptable just the same, but it seems a workaround is to disconnect EVERYTHING before going into sleep mode.

As for (2), I have no idea what the cause is. I can have nothing connected to the machine and sometimes it never wakes.

Are any or ALL of you folk have this problem using a BT Mouse. I just started using a BT mouse that I haven't used for over a year and this problem has resurfaced for me.

My mac is also having this problem- I've taken it out of my laptop case to find it blazing hot a couple of times before I gave up and started shutting it down before putting it up.

I'm worried about it possibly having damaged some of the internal hardware but the nearest mac store is an hour and a half away, and I need my computer for school.

All the problems I have with it are related to the sleep mode issue- sometimes if I leave it in sleep mode but not shut off, it turns itself off on it's own. A few (VERY few) times it'd simply go into a 'hard sleep' (or hibernate, whatever you want to call it) but it usually settles for inexplicably turning off.

It's latest trick was, after being put into sleep mode, refusing to come out of sleep mode. I know this is going to sound childish but I got a Mac so I wouldn't have to deal with the constant stream of BS dished out to me by my many PC laptops...Sigh. At least with the PCs I know what to do to fix them.

Help?

Apple, please - do something!

So many people are having problems. Problems that really affect our daily lives. This unibody Macbook Pro is the most unstable machine I have worked with in my career. I rely on this machine for my work as a self employed it-consultant, and I have lost many hours of work due to all the issues with this machine. You released updates to solve the problems - you must be aware that it didn't help? Why aren't you communicating that you are still trying to solve the problem?

You have left a lot of faithful users out to dry with this silence, and I honestly don't know how much longer I can keep accepting that my most important work tool is so bad.

Please communicate - tell us what is going on. That is the least you can do to your customers who are waiting for your product's instability to be solved.

Regards,

Jacob

For several weeks my system has not had any sleep walking episode after posting to this list. I have:

1- applied all firmware updates
2- turned "wake on bluetooth" off
3- removed and re-entered all bluetooth devices
4- did not re-add my iPhone
3- reset parameter ram (command - option - P - R during boot)

There are multiple instances now where I try to go to the bluetooth settings and it locks up my System Preferences. Beyond that, the problems relative to waking, including the black screen and typing to beeps, has not reoccurred.

It would be nice to be able to post images here but unlike a wiki or a listserv, no dice. So, what have checked in the bluetooth preferences:
Bluetooth Prefs -> Advanced -> Prompt for all incoming audio requests

and all other bluetooth related checkboxes unchecked, including the bluetooth file sharing under the Sharing preferences panel.

I will turn the 'wake on bluetooth' and see what we get.

I bought the new Macbook a week after it's release and have not had any problems until last night when my Macbook stopped going to sleep. It will not sleep when trying to do it manually or by closing the lid. I have reset the SMC and PRAM multiple times and have had no luck.

I poked around in the console and found this message every time I try to put my computer to sleep and it fails:

Wake reason = EHC1 EHC2

And occasionally it says this instead:

Wake reason = EHC1 EHC2 EC LID0

Does anyone know what these mean so I can try to get my machine back to being able to sleep? Thanks!!

Also, I am running 10.5.6 with all available updates installed.

Hello, I had the same problem. Today I tried "going to sleep" again and it worked.

The only relevant thing I did today was installing the "iousbfamily327.4.0log.dmg" file downloaded from developer.apple.com (search for "IOUSBFamily.kext 3.2.7")

I initially installed the file "IOUSBFamily.kext 3.1.5" for Leopard 10.5.5 a few days ago. I also had problems when inserting a USB mass storage device (I got a "blue screen").

Now, after I installed the USB debug kit for 10.5.6, my MacBook Pro goes to sleep again. Please write if this solution worked for you!
