Sleep Issue - New MacBook Pro

Just picked up a new MacBook Pro last night. Seems like a very nice machine (coming from a rev B, 1st gen MBP). An oddity, though. When closing the lid to put it in sleep mode it seems to awaken for a few seconds every 45 seconds. There will be an audible bzz-bzzzt (as if the hard drive spun briefly), then the apple logo light built into the lid illuminates for a few seconds. It then extinguishes and 45 seconds later the pattern repeats.

I'm not seeing anything in Energy Saver settings to tweak for this. Any ideas?

Same thing just happened to me. I just picked up a new one this morning after having the apple store do a migration to the new MacBook. I put it to sleep and in my computer bag and an hour later, it was totally on fire, the fans were blowing full boat and the screen would come on. I know I put it to sleep. I never had this problem with the last MacBook Pro. Any advice out there?

Ok, the latest. Tonight I stopped back by the Apple store and the friendly folks there let me put my broadband card in one of their demo units (requires the administrator password to setup the card the first time). Their demo unit then behaved exactly like mine - wouldn't properly sleep. I tested it before inserting the card and it would sleep fine. Exactly like mine.

I'm fairly convinced at this point that the problem is not a hardware defect, but is related to one or more state conditions which are triggering a bug in the firmware. Assuming Apple wishes to, they should be able to fix that with a firmware update (which are rather infrequent and are different from the much more frequent OS updates that occur).

I'd recommend that folks pay attention to what and how you're using your machines, prior to putting them to sleep, in order to try and identify the state condition(s) that might be affecting you (like my broadband card and its OS software in my case). I'd also recommend waiting 15-20 seconds after closing the lid to make sure it's properly sleeping before putting it in a case. In my experience, the iffy sleep condition, when it occurs, will reveal itself very quickly.

In the meantime, my overall impressions of this new MBP after four days are very positive. It's a quite remarkable machine.

This is the same problem that I'm having.
Black screen after waking from sleep, requiring the machine to come out of hibernation.
I first had this problem after installing 4GB of Crucial RAM. Took that out and returned to the stock Apple RAM. Problem seemed to be solved.
I installed a 4GB kit of G. Skill RAM and the issue seems to be back.

I'm about to put the stock RAM back in and see about taking this thing back and upgrading to the higher end model.

This stinks.

Just noticed the same thing happening to mine:( After trying suggested solutions like disconnecting wireless network, turning bluetooth off etc.,nothing seemed to help! I got annoyed and just shut the computer down & left it beside my bed overnight( not connected to any power source) Woke up this morning to further investigate the issue...but it's gone now?! I timed my machine for several minutes
& so far it's not waking for no reason, which leads me to believe it might have been a software glitch. I am going to keep an eye on this problem, and if that happens again I am calling Apple...

I have a new MacBook Pro and had the same issue. I put it in sleep, then took it out of my carrying case with the fan running very loud and it was very hot? What is going on??? Have I damaged my Mac, why don't they warn you? This did not happen on the PC. I don't mind this is they warn you of it as a problem or admit they are working on it. It would not boot up at all till I removed the battery.

Very concerned new user.

I have the same problem. It just happened to my new MacBook Pro. Put it in sleep, carried it home, about an hr. later I took it out of the case. The fan was running very loud and it was very hot. I could not turn it on at all and then finally the fan seemed to slow down or quit then I had to take the battery out and plug it in to solve it. I was low on power I think. But I am very worried that it was damaged? I did not see this a warning anywhere? Any advice on what is wrong?

I fixed the problem on mine! After calling Apple Care, they instructed me to to off my MBP, unplug from power, remove the battery and then hold the power button for about 10seconds to reset the system management controller. I haven't had any problems closing my MBP to sleep it since then.

However, if I'm at home with my wiresless mouse plugged in and I shut my laptop lid and then jiggle the mouse, the apple logo on top will light up. However once everything is unplugged and I put it in my case now, there are no sleep issues. I think resetting the SMC is the trick. Please let me know if this works for anyone else.

Noticed similar issues of closing lid on brand new MBP and when coming back to the computer, blank screen. Nothing else plugged in except broadband and AC adapter. Energy Savers already on factory dreadful. This has happened twice this week, but when manually putting computer to sleep, it turns on okay.

Know there is talk of firmware updates, also resetting the SMC seemed to work for
nsnell19.

Going to call Apple tomorow, but wanted to know if anyone else had solutions to the MBP not waking from sleep mode.

Thanks

Early MacBooks had this problem too--waking up and overheating. Sometimes resetting the SMC helped.

It's best to make sure the unit is sleeping and the sleep light is pulsating before sticking it in a bag.

Here is even a better solution for transporting. Use the widget called " Deep Sleep." It works great, will save battery life and only takes slightly longer for the unit to wake up. User uploaded file

Scratch that, doesn't seem to be the solution after all. Opened up this evening but once again screen failed to wake. Could hear hard drive whirring. Held down power button until whirring stopped then pressed power button again and screen came on and MBP woke from sleep. But this really isn't good enough for a machine costing upwards of £1500
It must be a software issue and it would be nice to hear something from Apple acknowledging this and reassuring us that they were working on the problem.

It seemed to be the solution too until this morning. It slept ok all through the night (no overheating), but I opened it up this morning and it was just a black screen. Pressing keys and pressing power for a couple of seconds didn't seem to help. I had to hold power down until I heard the hard drive switch off and then hit power again to turn it back on. Ugh. I hope they fix this soon.
