Sleep Issue - New MacBook Pro

Just picked up a new MacBook Pro last night. Seems like a very nice machine (coming from a rev B, 1st gen MBP). An oddity, though. When closing the lid to put it in sleep mode it seems to awaken for a few seconds every 45 seconds. There will be an audible bzz-bzzzt (as if the hard drive spun briefly), then the apple logo light built into the lid illuminates for a few seconds. It then extinguishes and 45 seconds later the pattern repeats.

I'm not seeing anything in Energy Saver settings to tweak for this. Any ideas?

My problem is now sporadic. Sometimes it sleeps fine. Other times it won't wake up. Usually don't have a problem sleeping/waking as long as I have the monitor up.

BUT...I did get a kernel panic tonight. I wasn't sleeping my laptop or anything. Just had firefox open and walked away for a second and turned around to find the gray box of death. I hope apple plans on fixing this soon! I haven't even had my machine for a week and I'm having more problems than I had with a 2.5 yr old Powerbook G4. I only had sleep/hibernate problems occasionally on my powerbook.

...So I got home after a long day of class, hooked it up to power, booted up and...

A BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH

it wasn't all black...it looked like black striped wallpaper. But it was frozen.

I turned it off again and booted it up again five minutes later.

I think I will return it tomorrow but they will probably try to hit me with a restocking fee because how can you really recreate the problem?

i've had the same problem with the heat and sleep mode. i've made this observation:

when the computer is plugged in and i close the notebook and it goes into sleep mode (eg plugged in at my desk and closed for the end of the night) it does not have the heat problem. if i close the notebook and it is UNplugged (eg close and put into my bag for the commute) it has this bad heat problem.

any ideas?

thanks.

Is the sleep light blinking BEFORE you put it in your bag to transport?

Try resetting your SMC.

Resetting the System Management Controller >>

Also, I suggest using the Deep Sleep widget when transporting. Your battery will last longer too. User uploaded file

Hi-

thanks for your suggestions. I will check on the sleeping light but I'm not sure why that would matter between having the laptop plugged in or not. It should do it regardless (sleep and not over heat with or without third party software). Honestly -- I spent $2500+ on a new macbook pro. surely I should be able to close the notebook without worrying whether it will burn in my bag. I shouldn't have to reset things or change preferences. this is a basic function my $700 HP notebook could do. It must be some sort of error in the system. it is something apple need to address and fix before someone's house get burned down.

but thanks everyone on the board for suggestions and help. i definitely did the right thing by moving over to a mac from a pc. I just wish this heating problem will be fixed.

MBP's can operate with the screen closed, so making sure the sleep light is on and blinking will ensure that your machine is actually sleeping, not just closed. On my previous-generation (early 2007) MBP, if I don't unplug my USB mouse before closing the screen, my machine doesn't sleep properly - something about unplugging it triggers something in the USB controller and wakes it up, making the machine think I want it to stay awake with the screen closed.

So that's why you want to make sure the machine is truly asleep before putting it in your bag.

Yeah, I called Apple Care the day this overheating/sleep issue happened and they had me reset my SMC. It helped for a while, then the problem returned. So far no overheating, but the not waking up from sleep has happened a couple of times. I agree with the other poster in that if I spent $2K on this new laptop it should work perfectly out of the box without having to reset or download new software. When is the fix coming?

I am on my third MacBook Pro and this issue is still occurring.

This is totally unacceptable and needs to be fixed immediately. I'm tired of my battery running down to zero and my Mac is as hot as a lump of coal when I take it out of my backpack. I have owned at least half a dozen Mac notebooks over the years and this is the first time I have ever had any issues regarding sleep/standby.

I am on the verge of taking it back and waiting for them to resolve the issue before I purchase another one.
