Sleep Issue - New MacBook Pro

Just picked up a new MacBook Pro last night. Seems like a very nice machine (coming from a rev B, 1st gen MBP). An oddity, though. When closing the lid to put it in sleep mode it seems to awaken for a few seconds every 45 seconds. There will be an audible bzz-bzzzt (as if the hard drive spun briefly), then the apple logo light built into the lid illuminates for a few seconds. It then extinguishes and 45 seconds later the pattern repeats.

I'm not seeing anything in Energy Saver settings to tweak for this. Any ideas?

After calling back, I was able to speak to a supervisor. He was very helpful and sent me an app that he had me run on my Mac. I guess it's purpose was to capture my system information and put it into a .dmg file. I zipped it and sent it back to him. He said he was going to move my case over to the engineering group. I also sent him a link to this thread and asked that he also give this to the engineering group for further research purposes. He said I should hear back within a day or two.

I hope they realize how widespread this problem really is.

I started looking into this further and poked around in the Console logs.

I found the exact time when my Mac woke up from sleep. I put my Mac to sleep at 8:21 and it woke up at 8:33. I was already driving in my car at that time with my Mac in my backpack.

10/29/08 8:21:00 AM kernel System SafeSleep
10/29/08 8:33:11 AM kernel Wake reason = OHC2

Can someone else check their Console logs and see if they have the same "Wake reason" code?

I also want to know what the OHC2 code means. This could very well explain what is actually happening that is causing our Macs to wake up from sleep.

I just had the same problem show up today. I was wondering why my MBP was showing battery drain just from being in my backpack for 20 minutes walking home from the train.

I think I've isolated the symptom. I believe that if I close the lid before I pull my Novatel Wireless EX720 card from the ExpressCard slot, it causes the problem. I did tell the system to power off the card first, then closed the computer, then pulled the card.

Console log shows repeated waking due to an event on the OHC2 bus, after which time the computer does a safe sleep:

10/30/08 12:48:02 AM kernel Wake reason = OHC2
10/30/08 12:48:52 AM kernel Wake reason = OHC2
10/30/08 12:49:44 AM kernel Wake reason = OHC2
10/30/08 12:50:36 AM kernel Wake reason = OHC2
10/30/08 12:51:26 AM kernel Wake reason = OHC2

...and so forth. I'm leaving out a lot of log messages in between these that relate to waking up, and then saving to the hibernate file and doing a safe sleep.

The broadband card appears in the IO registry at /MacBookPro5,1/AppleACPIPlatformExpert/PCI0@0/AppleACPIPCI/OHC2@6/AppleUSBOHCI/ Novatel Wireless CDMA@6300000, so it's on the OHC2 bus.

Furthermore, even though the card is not in the machine, it shows up in the IORegistryExplorer (a developer tool in the Xcode install). Normally, once the device is removed, it disappears from the device tree.

I believe the problem is removal of the card during the time the system writes to the hibernate file. The card remains in the IORegistry, and spurious state change events keep waking the machine, and the lid closure then causes sleep again.

I guess I have enough information to file with the bugreporter, tomorrow when I have more time.

My computer just did it again earlier this morning. I haven't even plugged anything into the USB ports since last night. I was using it this morning in my living room with the power cord plugged in. I closed the lid and went out to lunch. When I got back the Mac was turned on. I opened the lid. Same black screen as usual and I had to do a hard shut down. I checked the console log and it woke up about 4 minutes after I put it to sleep. It also has the same Wake reason of OHC2.

This is so frustrating. I guess I will just have to start shutting down my Mac everytime I am not using it until Apple posts a fix.

Talked to another product specialist today with Apple support. He said engineering is aware of the issue and said I can either send it in or take it back and get another one. He said it appears not all machines are affected. I told him about this 6 page thread on the Apple discussions board and he said, "Oh wow."

I just returned the third MacBook Pro I am now on my fourth. Let's see how this one works out...

I agree. I just got mine Monday and I put it to sleep. When I got home, I found it on and burning in the sleeve. A couple times I have put in to sleep and waited to see if the light was blinking. I would notice it would blink then turn back on.

I am very annoyed with Apple. 3K on a notebook and it arrives with problems (there are others besides this). Then to top it off, the iPhone 3G drops calls all the time.

My fourth MacBook Pro is displaying the same exact sleep symptoms. I just now got to the coffee shop, took it out of my backpack, and it was turned on. It wasn't blazing hot like usual but that is probably because it just turned on a few minutes before I took it out. I can't seem to find the Wake reason in the Console logs. Weird...

I just don't know what to do. This really *****. I guess I could reformat one more time and see if I can try and pinpoint when the sleep issue occurs. Four MacBook Pro's with the sleep issue just seems too strange...but then again a lot of you are also having the same exact problem so it's hard for me to believe that it is anything I am doing specifically.
