Sleep Issue - New MacBook Pro

Just picked up a new MacBook Pro last night. Seems like a very nice machine (coming from a rev B, 1st gen MBP). An oddity, though. When closing the lid to put it in sleep mode it seems to awaken for a few seconds every 45 seconds. There will be an audible bzz-bzzzt (as if the hard drive spun briefly), then the apple logo light built into the lid illuminates for a few seconds. It then extinguishes and 45 seconds later the pattern repeats.

I'm not seeing anything in Energy Saver settings to tweak for this. Any ideas?

Are any of you who are experiencing this sleep issue using an external hard drive as a Time Machine backup source? Are you using a USB mouse? Are you using anything that is bluetooth such as a mouse or keyboard? I am beginning to wonder if any of these devices might have something to do with it.

I just reformatted again and I have not attached any devices to my Mac since the reformat. I have put it to sleep about 3 or 4 times today and it has not woke back up.

I will begin installing updates one at a time to see if maybe it is something software related that might be causing the issue. But the whole "Wake reason = OHC2" leads me to believe it has something to do with a USB device. hmmmmmmmm

I had notorious sleep problems with a Power Mac G5 and a powered USB hub attached. It loved waking back up from sleep. User uploaded file

POSSIBLE SOLUTION

Based on a theory from an individual in another thread, I think I've solved my sleep/hibernate issue.

The theory suggests that importing preference files from a previous user account (via migration or archive/install), or syncing preferences via MobileMe is the root cause. Specifically, the power management preference files from previous generation MacBook Pro's are not compatible with our new unibody MacBook Pro's.

With that theory in mind, I performed an archive and install, making sure not to preserve user settings/preferences during Leopard reinstallation. Nor did I sync preference files with MobileMe after the archive and install.

Thus far, my problem appears to be resolved. No weird sleep/hibernate issues.

On a side note, Apple replaced my unidbody MacBook Pro with a new one a week after purchase. I requested they swap out the hard drive so that I could keep all my data. Lo and behold, the sleep/hibernate issues appeared on the new MacBook Pro. However, after the archive/install, ensuring I did not transfer any old preference files, the sleep/hibernate issues were gone.

Good feedback, Shain. This could be very possible. I am trying to remember if each time I have had the problem, I used the Migration Assistant tool with my external hard drive TIme Machine...

I am about to move on to the next step which will be syncing my external hard drive and making it my time machine.

At this point, I still have not had any sleep issues since my reformat and reinstall from yesterday morning.

edit

I should also add that I have NOT used the Migration Assistant this time around either. I manually copied my Music, Photos, Movies, and Documents folders from my external hard drive Time Machine folder. I did NOT copy the Library folder or any other folders other than the ones I listed. Shain might have the correct solution the more I think about it.

I wanted to start fresh and move everything manually, so I didn't bother using the Migration Assistant either. I have had NO sleep problems. User uploaded file

Hello Mac Medic,

I intend to purchase a new MBP but wanted to see if any problems, so will now wait a while, until this sleep issue is resolved.

However, I still have the sleep problem on my PowerMac G5 and since you refer to it being in the past("had"), could you email me the solution (so as not to clot up this thread w/PowerMac stuff). Or post as you feel best.

Respectfully,
Bill Gallagher

At that time that I first discovered the wake-from-sleep issue, I hadn't connected anything at all to the MBP. Nor had I installed any software.

I was however trying to connect the MBP to the internet (I had a lot of trouble doing so, but a problem with my router, not the MBP) through the Network Preferences panel of course. I left the computer for a few hours in sleep, came back and noticed that it could not wake from sleep, forcing me to hold the power button down to shut it off.

I'm on a 2.4 ghz Macbook Pro, 7200 RPM hard drive, with 4 gigs of RAM (pre-installed by Apple at time of purchase).

I've been noticing two sleep problems since i got the new computer. First, power depletes even when I think I put it to sleep. I don't have my broadband Internet card, am not connected to any external devises or hard drives, do not have bluetooth on, no sync or time machine on. Yet I go Apple/Sleep or just shut the lid, and the computer seems to be asleep (light flashes on front), but then when I wake, power is depleted.... Hurrumph.

Other sleep issue is waking it. Sometimes, and this is much more inconsistent, but I'd say it has happened about 10 times in the past week, I open the machine, and the screen stays blank. I hit various buttons, keystrokes -- nothing awakens it. So I hold the power key down, frustrated I have to reboot, and sometimes that actually gets it to start again, and sometimes it re-boots.

Got me? I'll keep checking all the settings, though, to ensure nothing is on to block sleep or prevent me from waking the machine.

Hey Everyone,

I as many others have been experiencing this problem. I read through this posting, and then did an online search for similar forums. I found the following link, that offers a solution to our problem. It has to do with a sleep mode that your computer is in. This article explains everything. I performed this switch. My MBP was set at a sleep mode of 3, and I set it to 0. Now I do not experience this problem. Try it out and let me know if it works for you. I hope this helps!
