Using a NAS as media server that can serve computeres and Apple TV directly

What is the best configuration (performance/price/robustness) to have one single scalable, “backupable” location to store videos and music that can act as a media server accessible by several mac and pc computers as well as several Apple TV within the same house (knowing that the Apple TV would access the location directly not going through a computer).

Mac Book Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

faZZter.. you need to go back and read the thread... we all know how appleTV is supposed to be set up we just want to establish if there are any other ways to do it...

some more complex NAS actually run server software on them and can in effect run a copy of iTunes directly on the NAS itself and CAN stream music at least to other mac... the only question we are trying to establish is if their are any NAS that can interface directly to an appleTV since they are actually running iTunes on the NAS it self it would seem that in theory at least this should be possible... but we have not been able to find a NAS that is actually capable of this... one reason might be that entering the passcode to establish the link... but i know it is long but read the rest of the thread and you will better understand what we are talking about and trying to establish.
