Green and Orange flashing lights.. how many others effected?

I have a 1gb shuffle, apples web site tells me was registered on 18 April 2005 so i cant get comp support.

It worked fine until a few weeks ago when on hitting play I got no sound just the alternating flashing of the green and orange light. It had been standing a few days after a recharge from the front USB port of my Dual G5 Mac it was working when inserted and i pulled it out and put it aside fully charged until i needed to use it

I have read a number of threads on this topic not of which appear to have an answer to solve my problems

My iPod updater software is 4.4 although i also have 4.2
When i insert the iPod neither versions recognise the iPod as attached Ihave tested this on my G4 1.33 Al powerbook which has a lot older versions of the iPod updater and none of them confirm the iPod is connected.
Checking 'About this Mac', under the Apple menu the iPod is listed as attached to the fast USB port and gives a serial number 000A2700101BA8FE which is not the same as is written on the case.

I have been maintaining my 'software update' as current as is possible and I know I recently recall taking both upgrades to iTunes and an iPod updater which conicided with the nano and the video launch although i did not recall manually applying the new updater to the Shuffle but i believe with the shuffle iTunes may be able to manage upgrading shuffle firmware when it is connected without the users knowledge. It appears to have expired about the time these upgrades appeared. I am prepered to accept this may not be co-incidental.

Have Apple introduced a bug during the firmware upgrade to some or all iPod shuffles that kills them? Have Apple confirmed there is a problem? Will it be possible for a forthcoming firmware update to correct this issue? Has anyone had this problem arise during normal cycle of use without the shuffle being connected to its mother computer (mac or pc) immediatly prior to it first being a problem.

If anyone has experienced the same process and symptoms listed above occuring and killing their iPod Shuffle please drop you name here and any thing you noted. Likewise anyone who had these symptoms and found a way to force the shuffle to wake up and become visible to the computer any tips on this will be very welcome

thanks

Hi,

Unfortunately, I've got exactly the same problem. After 2 months of standard usage, the fatal blinking orange/green led hit my 1gb iPod shuffle today. And the Apple Support site decided that my apple was not under support on-line warranty anymore.
All these posts proves that we are all facing a hardware weakness. (Are you listening APPLE guys ?)
I use USB key for years now on both Apple & PC platform and I never went through such fatal issue.
My kids plays with half-priced white product USB key mp3 players for more years and now are just laughing at me and at what they call "poor" high-tech product.
I'm waiting for a strong commercial action from Apple and not a 20$-35$ transport/fix fee for a 130$ "toy" product.

me too, me too. Today I went through the chat support, they told me to try it at home with my machine there, and then send it in to them if the restore or update ipod software does not work.

I am hoping for an answer. the shuffle was a gift, worked well for 1 month, and now green and orange blink when I try to play it, and orange blink when plugged in.

argh.

Let me be the next one with an iPod Shuffle 1GB and the flashing Green and Orange lights out of nowhere while standard use.
I bought it on April 2nd and updated the firmware to 1.2 three weeks ago. I will contact German Apple Support tomorrow and see what they tell me.

If anybody has news about Apple responding to our problem in any way let us know here. And if there's somebody else from Germany affected by this problem please contact so we can share experiences.

ciao Ralf

Same here. Shuffle worked great for three months, then just stopped. My two computers recognize the shuffle as an older version of an ipod now - every time i plug it in, i am prompted to update the software. i've already done this, in addition to two full restores, and it still doesn't work. flashing lights, no music, and one extremely frustrated Mac user. it seems this company is stretching itself too thin, pumping out new products every other month but not supporting the ones that are already out there.

I have the same problem with my 1GB iPod Shuffle. I
am using a Windows XP system. Nov. 5 I turned on my
Shuffle and the silent response was the flashing
green and orange lights. My computer has the latest
versions of iPod and iTunes software. However, even
though Windows recognizes a USB connected storage
device, the iPod program does not open and recognize
the Shuffle. Now I have wasted half the day trying
to fix the problem but my Shuffle remains useless
except for the ability to flash green and orange
lights.

Additonal story:
I visited the local Apple store. One of the attending Genius's verified my problem but was unable to provide a quick fix. He promply processed my iPod Shuffle for a return to Apple and provided me with a new replacement. I'm happy with my replacement but I cannot offer a cure for the problem.

I had a similar experience today. I contacted the german online store, where I bought my iPod this April and I was told to go to the Support site and search for number 3222, which produced a troubleshooting doc. At the end there was a possibilty to click on a link for a repair order on guarantee. I had to provide my serial number and the data of my amex card in order to get a new iPod. In somewhat 3 days, I was told, UPS would deliver the new iPod with a box to send back the old one within 10 days. Only if I wouldn't send back the old one, they will charge my amex card.
In the meantime I think there is no other solution and this is a fair deal.

I hope this will be useful for you all.

ciao Ralf

I'm having the same problems. About 5 months ago I recived a 1GB iPod Shuffle as a gift. Worked great until yesterday when it stopped playing and begun showing the orange-green blinking lights. My ibook won't recognize it, my PC shows it as a mass storage device but won't let me open it and whenever it's connected hangs iTunes and iPod updater (so I can´t restore it).

It might be coincidential, but nearly at the same time my Shuffle failed both my father's and a friend's iPod Mini stopped being showed on their computers. I hope it proves an error on the lastest version of iTunes so Apple can correct it.

I too have this problem. My wife's 1Gb shuffle blinks green and orange and when connected to the PC is not recognized by iTunes and cannot be updated by the iPod updater. The PC sees it as a USB drive but cannot access it. I cannot format it or change the drive letter as others have suggested. This occured shortly after updating the shuffle with the latest update. I hope Apple comes out with a solution quickly.

I jsut had this happen to 2 different ipod shuffles on 2 differnt mac computers. both shuffles were working fine prior to being conntected after an upgrade to latest version of itunes. the shuffles are not showing up in the finder, and not recognized by itunes or the ipod updater. all attempts to restore the ipods have failed.

My shuffle died (blinking green and orange leds) JUST AFTER the blasted 'latest and greatest' firmware/iTunes update.
I tried the standard help links and searched in so many forums looking for a solution for nothing.
Luckily I got mine replaced as it was covered in warranty to never 'update' again, and it´s working pretty good, thanks. Please stop telling people to update to the latest iTunes/iPod Updater, it´s only going to ruin their Shuffle. Apple should ACKNOWLEDGE that there´s a problem and FIX IT!
It´s not possible that all of sudden so many people complain about the same problem and Apple just ignores it or look at you as you have three heads. Kinda like 'Problem? What problem? I don´t see anything...'
