It seems from the number of questions that iPhone ringtone download is a dark art. I have new 3G iPhone...downloaded 3 Macmost free ringtones..no problem. In iTunes(8.01) they all appear in Ringtones and podcasts. They have the correct extension.m4r They play within iTunes. Then i Synch with the iPhone...and Synch completes (all the appropriate check boxes have been ticked.) None of the new ringtones appears in available ringtones...or in podcasts....or in iPod songs...they have vanished...? iTunes is still smiling and telling me Synch complete..OK to remove iPhone. Where do they go?
I have the same problem. When I create new m4r files and transfer them into the iphone they are stored with the same name and the same content of the first one. To explain better, all the files transferred after the first one, despite they have different name and content, the iphone replicates the first and that's all. How can I solve this problem?
The issue with ringtones duplicated on the iPhone should be resolved by updating your iTunes (currently 8.0.1) and your iPhone software (currently 2.1).
Also, test with approved content (i.e. a ringtone purchased from the iTunes Store, or a ringtone created in GarageBand (if you have access to an Apple Computer).
Thnx for your reply Ian....
I use iTunes 8.0.1.....iPhone v2.1...the latest upgrades i have.
All the files appear in iTunes listing under ringtones. They all have .m4r tags....when i apply and synch...i can see in top pane..."updating photos"...despite being in ringtones pane.
Remains a mystery.....
Thnk you Charles......the MacMost ringtones were downloaded from the iTunes store and was a smooth process.....appearing in "ringtones"....as i said to Ian (above)...when i synch "ringtones"...Updating photos" appears above.......still unable to synch any ringtones......
I use the Australian iTunes Store, and I receive an iTunes connection error message 11556 every time I attempt to create a ringtone from content purchased through iTunes only minutes before. Although I have found the discussion topics in iPod and iTunes discussion forums unhelpful, I did find a clue. It appears that the Australian iTunes Store does not support ringtones at this time.
I have been going around in circles for days trying to figure out why I receive this error message, and this is probably the answer closest to the truth.
Like you, I am using the latest version of iTunes (8.0.1.11) and have downloaded iPhone update 2.1 on my iPhone 3G. I have an active iTunes account that allows me to purchase content.
It would be very helpful if an Apple Support staff member monitoring the forums would prompt someone to address this issue, and inform us as to precisely what the status of creating ringtones in Australia, and other parts of the world, currently is.
