iPod doesn't appear in iTunes or on desktop

My iPod does not appear in iTunes or on the desktop even though it is charging though the firewire. Can anyone help? I tried the steps recommended in the support section of Apple's website, but nothing changed.

Emma,
I wish I had a fix for you, but I don't. I just tried to sync my iPod for the first time after upgrading to OS X 10.3.9 and loading iTunes 4.8 and it won't show up in iTunes or on the finder. It charges just fine and Apple Profiler knows that it is connected. A similar thing happened to me in February (you can look up the thread at http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?7@@.68a547f3/136 . Last time Apple posted a patch within a week or so. Hopefully they will do the same this time. Meanwhile, it is certainly frustrating.

Oh its troubling to see new users with the same problem that plagued many of us months ago. I finally broke down and purchased a new iPod.
I had a 1st gen that wouldn't show up after I upgraded to 10.3.7. I tried every blasted thing. My firewire port is all wiggly now. figure I'll sell it for scrap on ebay. I gave up on Apple providing a solution for firewire folks. If you check thru the discussions, you'll find many different solutions to usb iPods and the way their users were able to troubleshoot them. Happy fishing.
I plan to upgrade to 1q0.4 soon. It better not mess with my mini.

Same thing here folks....so much so that I thought it was me!

Sometimes the iPod doesnt show up - just charges via FireWire, sometimes she thinks she's connecting to my G4 Powerbook but the G4 doesnt want to mount her.

Here's what I just did and surprisingly it worked:

-Rebooted the iPod (off the cradle) Menu and Play buttons until the Apple logo came up.
- Disconnected the cradle
- Recradled the iPod
- Reconnected to the Firewire port

Seems to have worked for me

Hi Scott,

indeed, your ipod doesn't show up in itunes because of the fat32 file system in place. It should turn up as an external hd.
All music on the ipod is hidden, so I bought a nice program called Macintosh Explorer 4.3 to unhide the music. I then was able to see all files on the ipod and copy them to another hard drive. I then ran the Ipod updater and installed the apple HFS+ file system. After that the ipod appeared in Itunes.
I then had to find all my files back in the saved ipod file system and import them again into itunes. After that I synchronised and voila, the ipod worked again.

I'm also having the same issues - connect up my iPod which appears on my desk top, it charges up fine but nothing appears in iTunes.
I also tried my girfriends iPod mini and it also does the same. Very very annoying.

I will try some of the suggestions which have been posted and see what happens.

Cheers
Nick
